Channel Zero: Candle Cove, Part One: You Have to Go Inside
October 20, 2016 1:58 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe
SyFy launches its new horror anthology with a story based on Kris Straub's creepypasta, "Candle Cove" (original story.) In the debut episode, a child psychologist investigates the 1988 murders of several children in his hometown, including his own twin brother. A half-forgotten kids' TV show from the 1980s seems strangely connected. The series is produced by Max Landis (Chronicle).
I have been looking forward to this so much, I cannot even tell you.
This first episode was a mixed bag to me. There are absolutely stunning, terrifying images, with Kris Straub all over them. But they're embedded in what so far is a bit of an off-the-shelf story set in one of those towns that never left the '70s, the ones that filmmakers love, with the one diner and the one motor-court motel.
It really hits its stride when it evokes the deep weirdness and emotional pull of that one show you saw when you were a kid that scared you so much that you could hardly believe you didn't imagine it. I'll be watching for more of that.

Fiona Shaw (Aunt Petunia from the Harry Potter films) is terrific, too.
Given that the original story is a bit... skeletal... I will be interested to see how this fleshes out.
It's unnerving, though.
