Special Event: MLB baseball playoffs 2016: World Series
October 25, 2016 4:07 PM - Subscribe

The Chicago Cubs face the Cleveland Indians, in a best-of-seven series to determine the 2016 MLB champ.

This post will be for discussing the actual games. For discussing other aspects (the cities, etc), there's a World Series post on the blue. And if anyone wants to dig in on the name of the Cleveland team there's a thread on that here.

The strikezone is almost always fine, it's just an easy thing for fans to pick on when emotions are running high and you're certain they're out to get you.

My favorite is the check-swing. Everyone in the stadium, in particular, is just certain those calls are always wrong, as if they can even remotely tell from their seat.

On ESPN, as well as many of the various local broadcasts (including, I believe, all of the many Comcast Sports ones), they show the pitch tracker on virtually every pitch. Why this is beyond the capability of the national postseason broadcast, I do not know, but my conspiracy theory is that they're wary of showing up the umps in front of the big audience.

I'll say this for the Fox team... Smoltz's summary of Arrieta is dead-on. He says he has power stuff with wicked movement but his control leaves him for spells. Last year, it would be for 4-6 pitches in a row. In 2016, he has the exact same stuff, but he sometimes misses his spots on ten or twelve in a row.

The more I reflected on that, the more I came to the conclusion that Joe Buck isn't for or against any particular team. He's obsessed with trying to figure out what hindsight will deem The Big Story of This Year's World Series and he's obsessed with trying to be on the right side of that in advance. So when he think the story is "Corey Kluber, Andre Miller, and What a Few Truly Great Pitchers Can Achieve" he's all over that. And when he thinks the story has shifted to "Kyle Schwarber's Amazing Comeback and the Curse-Breaking Team of Under-25 Year-Old Cubs" he's all over that.

If the Steamers win tonight, he'll be back on the Kluber train tomorrow, trying to make sure history notes him as having predicted what will look to be a Cleveland comeback. If the Cubs win, he'll probably double down on his second choice storyline.

The average number of home runs for the Cub hitters in tonight's lineup is 20, and that's with Schwarber on the bench. Josh Tomlin gave up 32 home runs this season. The wind at Wrigley, at last report, was blowing straight out at 15-20 mph.

Because of the monthly first Wednesday Chicago meetup, I periodically take first Thursday off, both to be able to stay out late, recover the next day, and use up vacation time. How the Cubs informed Bob Newhart's philosophy on life
On why it pays to sign autographs at the ballpark: "I'd be in town doing a standup date. My wife and I would go to Wrigley Field. One day we were there and a bunch of kids, young kids, they wanted me to sign their scorecards. Between innings I'd sign their scorecards.

"So now years later I was appearing on the Johnny Carson show. And next door were dressing rooms for the Richard Pryor show he was doing at NBC. And then there was a sign, 'John Belushi.' So a knock on the door, I open the door, and John Belushi is there. He says, 'I'm John Belushi.' I say, 'Yes, I know who you are, John. I love your work.' And he said, 'Do you remember, years ago, you and your wife went to a Cub ballgame and a bunch of kids ran up and wanted an autograph?' I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'I was one of those kids.' That was wild."
posted by Etrigan at 10:04 AM on November 2, 2016 [7 favorites]

google tells me Newhart is 87. I added Cubs to the search box and there are pages full!

I'm still rooting for the Indians. Their closer doesn't throw 100 MPH which makes it more sporting.

Their closer doesn't throw 100 MPH which makes it more sporting.

The Cleveland's best reliever is like eleven feet tall and throws side arm with his release point being right under the first baseman's chin. I don't know that he's that much less fantastically impossible to hit.

The Home Plate Ump tonight has a small strike zone and does not call low strikes. This will be a replay of last night.

The Cubs better hitters have started laying off the curve balls below the strike zone as was clearly evidenced yesterday. That combined with the fact the Kluber is going on 3 days rest again bodes well for the top of the order. OTOH, even though Hendricks is a groundball pitcher, he pitches to contact rather than throw curves for strikes like Kluber. So I don't think the ump not calling low strikes is going to affect him as much.

I have given up on Baez, Heyward and Contreras. Their swings look really awful and they seem to have really no awareness at the plate. OTOH, the top 6 bats seem to have woken up and all the at bats yesterday were really disciplined.

Although I was not a fan of Maddon calling on Aroldis to start the ninth after the Rizzo HR really put the game out of reach; I don't think it is going to matter. Forget Lackey, who claims he is ready for an inning; the Cubs have Hendricks, Lester (1 inning), Edwards and maybe Montgomery and Wood still available (these are the pitchers that Maddon seems to trust right now) even without Chapman. This should be enough as I expect the game to be a laugher. I am not really confident of this, but I have a feeling this is going to be a replay of the Hendricks-Kershaw game 6 NLCS matchup pitchingwise., with a better Cubs offense.

My prediction, 11-4. Cubs win.

Sounds good to me.

I'll keep hoping there's some truth to the stat local sports radio in Chicago keeps hawking indicating that virtually every time the Cubs faced the same pitcher three times in a short span this year, they kicked the holy crap out of him the third time around.
posted by DirtyOldTown at 2:20 PM on November 2, 2016

I can understand why Cleveland fans are confident because Kluber is pitching and they figure their ace will shut the Cubs down.

I would only suggest they remember that Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw had similar plans and are watching this game at home.

This game is a coin flip. There are no sure things at all. It's going to be magic and luck.

I can't wait.

One two three four five six seven eight nine -- it's the nine-inning thriller!

Number one!
The challenge: achieve early traction,
If you reach first base, you've started on the action.

Number two!
If you do, have a friend drive you forward,
A base hit, not gonna make it on to third.

Number three!
Bring another man up to the front,
Swing through three strikes or try to score an infield bunt.
Outs are commonplace, specially for rooks --
Don't worry, you've still got two more looks.

Number four!
If you haven't advanced, that's all right.
Time to get a clean up man on site.
With two men aboard you want a facility
To loft the ball out of the park -- a rare-ish ability.

Five!
Hit the ball where the sun is in the sky,
Make sure the light flashes down in the fielder's eye.

Number six!
Just remember not take the music on the chin
It's probably your own fault for crowding the plate too far in.

Seven!
Music break! Take a breath, raise your voices,
"Home team" or "Cubbies" are your only two choices.

Number eight!
Your last chance to get to home plate
Call up a slugger, see if he can give you something great.

Number nine!
Swing into the zone, aim no higher
Summon all the courage you require
Then count

One two three four five six seven eight nine -- number nine batter -- SAFE!

This is so much fun, man. I'm a lifelong Royals fan and the past two postseasons have been awesome but agonizing - so much stress when your very own team is on the brink! It's nice to have that level of anxiety removed. (See how I'm trying to convince myself it's cool that KC finished at .500?) But really, both these teams are so likable and evenly matched and the whole series has been a joy to watch.

The 2-2 missed strike call was a backbreaker, and so unforgivable when these are supposed to be the best umps. He called it a ball because it wasn't where Contreras was set up, but it was all plate and plenty high enough. Maddon should have at least talked to Hendricks to see where his head was at before going to Lester.

Game 7, 9th inning, tie game between Cleveland and Chicago. The pit of despair.

I mean this was pretty much inevitable, right? As soon as it was clear who was gonna be in the series, I was certain that it was going to hit 7 games and probably extra innings, to boot. If there were ever a pair of teams that could find a way to both lose at the last moment, this is that pair. (N.b. grew up in Cleveland, currently living on the North Side of Chicago, so I feel like I'm speaking with a certain amount of relevant experience on both sides here.)

Despite having predicted this, though, I was not ready for the reality of the situation. ?!!?!?!?!

It is filler time. Were the folks in Chicago surprised when Jay Cutler started Monday night? All the stories in my feed said Barkley was going to start and Cutler was cleared to play but didn't have enough practice which I thought was ridiculous. And then he played really well. I wonder if Minnesota got caught off guard when they went out there and all of a sudden Cutler was chucking it down the field.

The best highlight I saw (I did not watch the game) was he bonked Jeffrey right in the back of the helmet with about a thirty yard toss. If Jeffrey hadn't been sprinting full speed away from the football that could induce a concussion.

Nothing felt for me, a Red Sox fan, like Game 4 of the 2004 series. I am so happy for the Cubs now.

The broadcast i'm watching just has a series of "reaction shots" - all the players, and then that portion of the stands where John Cusack and that family with the kid were; the kid was just standing in dropped-jaw wonder.

They also cut to elsewhere in the stands where Bill Murray was, and they caught his reaction freakout - but better than that was that the guy standing next to him was just standing in wide-eyed wonder just saying "we won?.... we WON?....." over and over.

Fifth-generation Cubs fan here, raising the sixth generation! I keep crying because my grandpa wanted a Series win SO. MUCH.

I hope my Cleveland-based family doesn't have to wait as long... only the oldest generation remembers the last World Series win, and at this rate, I'm not sure they'll get to see the next one.

Neighbor Kid came over right at the start of the tenth to deliver cupcakes (its Mrs. Bartfast's birthday and even she and youngest child stayed up to watch). All of us, including Neighbor Kid and his father watched the finish. After it was over, I called my oldest best friend who lives in Chicago, is a die hard fan; he's going through a divorce and lost both parents this year, and is depressed as hell. I'm sentimental as hell and baseball matters and my blood brother's faith in humanity is like 75% higher tonight.

Anyway, Oldest Son fell asleep in my lap while I was on the phone. I carried him upstairs and tucked him in, kissing his forehead.

Good god. I don't think it can be called into question. That was the greatest World Series not just of our lifetimes, but in the time-media era. It's hard to judge against the written accounts of more than a century ago, but in sheer numbers of heart-attack moments, and presumably heart attacks proper, baseball has never seen the like.

Weirdly I had a more endorphin-addled fuzz last night in game six. Whatever.

One last thought.

I came to baseball, this time, late, like five years ago at forty-five. My Uncle Hank, a union man, a weldor, a mischevious giant of a man who met my aunt at an Elvis Presley concert in Seattle while on a weekend liberty from his shipbuilding Navy duties across the Sound - once he heard I had the bug we've been thick as thieves.

We talk or email about baseball bullshit and he schools me no end, him having more than a lifetime of study on me. I find stuff on eBay for cheap that will make his day. we facetime to watch games together. Last couple of years he and my aunt, my adoptive mother's sister, have been out here timed such that we have been able to catch a game out here, the Mariners hosting his team since he was a child, the Cleveland Indians.

He always pays, I haven't been able to catch him out yet. my favorite team in the 1970s, the era of Hank's shattering of Babe's record? The Cubs. Because they were losers, and unpopular in my geographic region, and if there's a thing that defines me it's "fuck you, that's why".

So rooting for the Cubs where I lived in the 1979s was, in my mind, like kicking a cop in the nuts and running before your head was opened up by a slug or a club. I was a child, indulge me.

There was no way I could root for the Indians in this series. I apologized to Uncle Hank, who has considered and rejected Chief Wahoo as an acceptable mascot image, before the Series proper started. He's been integral to the social and intellectual development of my baseball interest. He's 85. The Indians just lost their first title shot since he was a teenager (I think, I'm pretty weak on MLB deep cut facts, as I'm a newbie, for some values of newbie).

I am calling him first thing in the morning and reiterating how much he means to me. Godddammit. I tried to call after the game was over but it was late in Ohio, and everywhere.

Thanks Hank. This was amazing, and you made it more amazing by your generosity and kindness. I love you. Just wait 'til next year. The Mariners will probably knock Cleveland sideways, and then beat the Cubs in four.

What a game. What a Series.

(The Indians made it to the World Series in 1997 but lost in seven games to the Marlins. In 1995 the Indians won an impressive 111 games in the regular season and made it to the World Series, but lost in six games to the Braves. Before that they hadn't made it out of the regular season since 1954. So they've had a few chances recently.)

This was not a good game. Lots of errors and bad plays on the field, both managers making very questionable decisions... it really seemed to be a battle between two teams determined to lose. How many throws to first on routine plays threatened to end up in dugouts? How many times did runners get picked off or get thrown out by a mile trying to take an extra base? The only reason the bad choices of one team didn't hurt them was due to the bad play of the other team. And I swear it seemed like both teams were loaded with Canadians the way they were apologizing and chatting to each other after hard slides and collisions.

It was not a sparkling gem that people will be talking about for years. It was messy, aggravating, and poor play for two teams that convincingly made their way to the final. The result? Yes, that's something we'll be talking about, at least until the Cubs make the playoffs again and Cleveland manages to win one. Then like the Curse of the Bambino it'll be forgotten like the Berlin Wall.

I'm glad the Cubs stumbled less than Cleveland did, and it was a fun emotional roller coaster, but it was not a well played game.

I remember Cleveland vs. the Marlins back in 1997. I was a hardcore Marlins fan at the time (we existed, kind of). I've been dissatisfied with the Marlins since they changed their name to Miami, and fell out of baseball for a while.

But the Cubs. My grandpa would watch them on WGN every home game, reliable as can be, and I watched because he loved the Cubs. We both cried when Harry Caray passed away. Grandpa died 10 years ago, but his team did it, those loveable losers won it all. I guess now I'm a Cubbie, and I know Grandpa would be proud of them. I'll carry the torch for this generation for us both.

My grandfather disliked Harry Caray so much he would leave the room when Harry was on; if Harry was on the radio, Grandpa would watch the TV broadcast, and vice versa. The last time the Cubs were in the World Series, Grandpa was in the Pacific somewhere, playing baseball when they weren't on duty. He'd been a standout high-school athlete and was evidently recruited to play ball professionally, but he always said later there was no money in it then, and besides, he'd made a promise to my grandma. He came home to Chicago after the war, married her, and that was that for baseball. But they were Cubs fans, and so many of my memories of them (and many of my other dearly departed family) also involve the Cubs. I've thought a lot about them all these last few weeks.

I set the VCR to record the rest of the game and added an hour, but who knew there was going to be a rain delay and an extra inning? FanGraphs: The Moment Before the Moment
On paper, this is a pretty ordinary baseball sequence. In practice, it was more extraordinary than it reads. Because this is how Almora advanced. [...]

In effect, it’s a stolen base, a stolen base that didn’t need for a pitch to be pitched. When the ball landed in Rajai Davis‘ glove, the Cubs had a 50% chance of winning. After Almora arrived at second, that jumped up to 57%, and then the Rizzo walk pushed it to 59%. That’s pretty much all Almora, a rookie who didn’t know he’d be doing anything until the inning’s first at-bat. Almora had a moment, setting up the Ben Zobrist Moment. The Almora play was not the biggest one of the game. But it was a key contributor to the biggest sequence of the game. And so I want to review how the play came to happen. [...]

Albert Almora isn’t the hero. He didn’t make the biggest hit, nor did he make the biggest play. He’s one of few Cubs who might have to say who they are if they want a free drink. Given all the moments from an unforgettable Game 7, some moments will have to be forgotten; some will just slip through the cracks. Maybe, some months from now, they won’t be talking about the one-out tag-up. But that was the moment that set up the Moment, the moment the Cubs’ fortunes started to turn. Kris Bryant might’ve just missed a pitch he wanted to hit, but thanks to a good read and aggressive baserunning, Bryant’s fly out still put the Cubs on course for a World Series title. They say that it had been a few years.

Y'all, I'm not even much of a baseball fan - and when I do watch I go for the Boston Red Sox (if you grow up in New England it is genetic). I have no flippin' idea who any of the players are, what their season was, or any of that.

But there is something about the people who come so close time and time and time and time and time and time again, heartbreakingly close, and come in second again and again - and then finally they get it. As the kids say, that gets me in the feels.

Also watching lots of happy people explode in joy is happy making, too.

And as for the Indians - I've been to maybe three major league ball games in my life, one of which was Red Sox vs. Yankees, in Yankee Stadium, in the 90s. I was the lone Sox fan in a section full of Yankees fans (including my then-boyfriend, who had brought me to the game), and endured some good-natured ribbing from everyone and sassed back as good as I got. I think I was even shouting out Dylan Thomas at Mo Vaughn during the last inning ("RAGE! RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT!")

And of course, when the dust settled, they lost. But me, my boyfriend, and the guy in the row in front of us who teamed up with my boyfriend to tease me, all ultimately agreed that it was a hell of a good game. The Sox didn't screw up, the Yankees had to play hard, and everyone was at the top of their game and it was fantastic.

To the Indians - everyone had to play hard, everyone had to bring their A-game and it was fantastic. Hold your head high.

The CSN Chicago feed has HD feeds from on-location and a mix of highlights from the year.

The MLB.com feed has some production value and is a solid choice but isn't the same as the MLB Network feed you can stream online if you have MLB Network through certain (non-Comcast) providers. That one is really good, in HD, with interviews with the players, etc.

TL;DR: skip WGN. Probably anything else is decent. MLB Network is best, if you are able.
