The scene between Burgle and Lopez at the bar was genuinely lovely. Sad and sweet and human.

Agreed, maxsparber. And holy shit is Nikki now a force to be reckoned with! Love it. I'm really hoping that Ruby Goldfarb turns out to be the power behind Varga. It would be cool to have the women wind up as the key players in every aspect of the final plot line.

Yes, the Nikki seen was tremendous, a vindication of her certainty that with the right partner she can sit opposite anyone and be their match.

Also, the undertone was that she was hurt and angry over Ray's death in a way that implies a deeper bond than her nature as a grifter would have indicated.

I could watch a whole season of Nikki Swango playing 11 dimensional bridge with ganglords/politicians/police, you betcha.

I'm glad they left Mr. Wrench with her. Otherwise her turnaround from two-bit thief to criminal mastermind feels unearned. But I can buy it as a switch of partners. She's always had potential but kept getting caught on her own and was even worse off with a buffoon like Ray. But working with someone like Mr. Wrench she's amazing. Fully actualized, as it were.

I've been thinking this since she turned up a few episodes ago. You don't hire Laura Roslin and keep her in the background. She's got to be Varga's boss.

She did say she was from St. Louis, which is where the headquarters of the mob from last season is located.

I swear to god if I see Mike Milligan in the next episode I will lose my shit and break something in all my excitement.

I was lukewarm on this season, but Burgle + Lopez was so heartwarming and Nikki v. Varga so satisfying that I don't really care what I thought of the first eight episodes.

And there'd better be a lot more Hamish Linklater next week! I really enjoyed him in Legion and was disappointed after Larue Dollard seemed to fall off Fargo's radar.

OK so the part where Gloria regains her personhood, as indicated by the automatic dispensers finally recognizing her - immediately after some rock solid Bechdel Test passing between her and Winnie - was a really nice touch.

And it was the Jewish mob.

The AV Club review assumes that no-one took Ray's claims seriously, so the weight of many scenes is retroactively applied after Emmit's confession. But I had always assumed Ray was telling it like it is - I don't think he's the kind of guy to persist through difficulty for a mere shake-down, he'd only bother for something he felt was justified. Am I alone in that, or is Zack Handlen just obtuse?
