Book: Wuthering Heights / Emily Brontë

At the centre of this novel is the passionate love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff - recounted with such emotional intensity that a plain tale of the Yorkshire moors acquires the depth and simplicity of ancient tragedy.

Angels in America: Millennium Approaches

It is 1985, Ronald Reagan is in the White House, and AIDS is causing mass death in the Americas. In Manhattan, Prior Walter tells Louis, his lover of four years, that he has AIDS; Louis, unable to handle it, leaves him. As disease and loneliness ravage Prior, guilt invades Louis. Joe Pitt, a Mormon and Republican attorney, is pushed by right-wing fixer Roy Cohn toward a job at the US Department of Justice. Both Pitt and Cohn are in the closet: Pitt out of shame and religious turmoil, Cohn to preserve his power and image. Pitt's wife Harper is strung out on Valium, causing her to hallucinate constantly (sometimes jointly with Prior during his fever dreams) and she longs to escape from her sexless marriage. An angel with ulterior motives commands Prior to become a prophet. (Description from Wikipedia)

I sort of thought Matty might go home anyway, since he had issues with his party, and Tasha's issues were with the curd and presentation. I would have been sad about either outcome. Points to Dan for managing to get a handshake despite using matcha and Paul being a giant baby. [view]

I missed Ten. Tennant. Oh dear, I just realized that. Destined since birth to play the Tenth Doctor. I enjoyed the episode and the return of the Doctor and Donna dynamic. There is a sort of thematic thing going on here with the split room? Wasn't there an episode with Wilf stuck in a chamber when the Tenth regenerated? I was thinking... [more]

I feel like RTD was trying a little too hard ("binary"/"non-binary"/***cringe***) Doctor Who has never really been subtle about its subtext and I actually thought this was inspired - "binary, binary, binary" was from all those years ago and this was fitting: the energy was spread across Donna and Rose, and... Tennant. Oh dear, I just realized that. Destined since birth to play the Tenth Doctor. Sadly, not since birth - "Tennant" is a stage name. His birth name is David McDonald. But the actors' union will not allow two people to have the exact same name, so when he joined Actors' Equity at age 16 he was told there already was a... [more]

While Haworth was and is pretty remote, the sisters did have access to current periodicals and newspapers, and we have a good idea about what poetry and fiction they read. (They didn't have reliable access to contemporary fiction at all, which may be one of the reasons that Wuthering Heights is so unusual!) As for being sheltered, Emily... [more]

Josh’s Nan has had more screen time than Prue this season and I’m starting to suspect that the person in the photograph is actually Josh in a wig. I feel like this book really had almost a reverse bell curve for me - when I was young I loved it for "Wild! Tragic! I quite enjoyed Eve running afoul of local building ordinances deep in my engineer soul. I also liked how her random park without planning... [more]

I may actually be Making Shows Worse because if this was pandering? Shoot it directly into my veins. I may actually be Making Shows Worse because if this was pandering? Shoot it directly into my veins.
