Book: Red Side Story by Jasper Fforde

It's the UK, but not as we know it: civilisation has rebuilt after an unspoken 'Something that Happened' five hundred years before. Society is now colour-based, the strict levels of hierarchy dictated by the colours you can see, and the economy, health service and citizen's aspirations all dominated by visual colour, run by the shadowy National Colour in far-off Emerald City.

This came on HBO one afternoon and midway through I got off my dad's armchair and packed my things and moved out. Just couldn't take how I was wasting my time watching it, just watching anything that was on. My family was friends with a family who owned a video store, I'd watched endless stacks of films in the vhs era. But this was so bad that I... [more]

Thorzdad, I think the clue is in the episode title. The vision of Anjin in his old age is a dream of the man marooned in Japan: a dream of returning to riches, glory, family and a prestigious life in England after defeating the Portuguese. That dream, the culmination of his original ambition, is completely abandoned during his showdown with... [more]

OK, I feel like if I leave it at that, it's sour in a way I don't want to be. So what I will say about this film is that it is not at all about the before or the how or the why of a civil war in the US; it is about the during. It is about making that chaos and violence a hell of a lot less abstract for Americans. It's about the... [more]

It felt very wrong to me that Lucy didn't do more scavenging of the Super Duper Mart at the end. Also that the Ghoul seemed like he was just going to load up his hat with drugs when he could have just taken that whole case. Aren't they going to regret not having this stuff later? Why yes I do have trouble with inventory management whenever I'm... [more]

I once saw an interview with Stewart where someone asked him how he conveyed such sincerity. He said he learned a trick while working on Destry Rides Again. Marlene Dietrich told him that the secret to seeming sincere on film is: when you are interacting with someone, pick one eye and focus on that. Normal people look someone in the... [more]

This really snuck up on me. It's enjoyable enough throughout its runtime, even as Horrocks' Nicola is, at first blush, a bit shrill and Spall's Aubrey can be cringe-inducing. By the end, though, it really pulls it all together, and you realize you've been watching a fairly layered rumination on what dreams mean for working people. Each of the... [more]

I am now firmly week by week release when it comes to shows, especially 45 to 60 minute episodes. I tuned into Fallout because of all the positive buzz I saw on social media, which has pretty much died out now. I loved this episode. This is a great use of the show's history and even if the production history of the show (and the quality of it) has varied so much, this was a great way to showcase how much the show itself has changed, as well as the characters. The Burnham/Burnham fight was great. The ongoing theme of "getting to know people is the... [more]

I'm not sure I'd sweat it all that much, Atreidies. The show is a bona fide hit and they're already scouting locations for season two. The advantage of The Dump strategy, especially for the first season of anything, is that one weaker episode (and there are weaker episodes) isn't going to turn into a narrative of its own. People are talking... [more]

I liked this! I could nitpick some of the dialogue beats or complain about Michael stopping to indulge in personally meaningful moments while she's racing against the clock to save the universe (again), but I won't; this barely registered on the cringometer. I have yet to regret a single moment spent with Mike Leigh and I deeply appreciate the actors who have worked with him across multiple projects, Timothy Spall stands out but Broadbent and Thewlis.. loving it. And Steadman and Horrocks?? I have seen this film but it has been so long that watching it again would be its own reward. [view]

Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman, and this was such a sad send-off for the character and the franchise.
