All Grown Up
December 20, 2018 12:07 PM - by Jami Attenberg - Subscribe

Who is Andrea Bern? When her therapist asks the question, Andrea knows the right things to say: she’s a designer, a friend, a daughter, a sister. But it’s what she leaves unsaid—she’s alone, a drinker, a former artist, a shrieker in bed, captain of the sinking ship that is her flesh—that feels the most true. Everyone around her seems to have an entirely different idea of what it means to be an adult. But when Andrea’s niece finally arrives, born with a heartbreaking ailment, the Bern family is forced to reexamine what really matters.

I continue to be amazed at the number of things on my "best of" list from last year that I never got around to posting on FF. This is great. Jami Attenberg is great.

Several of her books have been optioned for film and television over the last 18 months, so there is a limited window of opportunity available to catch on to her before say, The Middlesteins hits Showtime or Helena Bonham Carter gets her Saint Mazie launched into whichever UK TV/streaming arrangement it ends up in.

This was a Tournament of Books long lister from last year. Pity it didn't make the short list, as it deserved better.

I didn't know much about this book beforehand and read it along with Patricia Lockwood's No One Is Talking About This. To my surprise, the books inadvertently turned out to be companion pieces.
