...you can tell when privileged rich people who’ve never been poor write screenplays about being poor, because they always include scenes where the poor person’s credit card is awkwardly declined, as J.D.’s is when he tries to buy gas during his road trip. In reality, when you’re poor, you know every cent you have in the bank, down to the last penny, and you have already calculated exactly how much gas you can put in your car and how far that gas will get you before you run out of money. The only people who think poor people are surprised when they run out of money are people who think poor people are poor because they’re bad with money. But really, a lot of poor people are great with money, and Hillbilly Elegy not knowing that is just one of the zillion ways it sucks.

I have to admit that I have not watched this movie but I did read this satire of it and spent about an hour laughing at this bit:

[A flash-forward to JD as a strapping young man self-consciously dining from fancy plates on a white tablecloth with a bunch of Yale snobs.]
SNOB 1: The quinoa fork is fifth from the left, my hayseed friend.
[Effete snickers all around.]

I liked this one, but how could I not with Amy Adams being amazing and Glen Close rocking every scene.

And yeah, sometimes poor people do have their cards declined because some purchase was delayed coming through or you forgot that you let a friend use it to buy groceries or something. Or you pick the wrong card by accident. It happens and it sucks and is embarrassing.

Papaw: Don't get bit by a cottonmouth!

I mean... sure, Papaw. They don't live in this part of the country, so I'm comfortable promising that.
