The books can absolutely not be read in any order, with the possible exception of books 4 and 5.
I enjoyed this book -- it was a little fanservicey, but that's fine. It was a nice ending to the series, which leaves a lot of room for fanfic. I am glad there is finally queer rep in the series, it was a weird thing earlier.

Spoilers:
The book was enjoyable, but there's a volcano front and center on the cover and it never explodes. I think that was a mistake.
Also, I've read all the books within the past couple of years, so I vaguely remembered stuff (the more recent the book the more I remembered, as I read in order) but there was still a lot I was obviously missing/not catching the significance of. Lots of characters who I didn't recognize and therefore their various scenes didn't have much impact as I didn't get the point. (look, I literally had to look up Erondites after the first chapter because at least that one was obvious that I needed to be reminded). I would absolutely not recommend reading this book "in any order", if you read it before the others you both won't enjoy it or understand why others did, and you'll spoil yourself for massive parts of previous books.
At some point I'll have to reread the entire series in one go.

I have also read that about the ordering being unimportant and was really surprised. I think I started listening to book 4 before I had read book 3 and ended up stopping to go back and read them in order. I feel like the events of #2 are spoiled if you read any later book first.
