So during the DC 52 reboot, they'd brought in a young, semi-grimdark Superman. He died saving the universe (of course) exposing his secret identity as Clark Kent in the process. So in the Rebirth soft reboot, the world is left without a Superman. Until one steps forward: Lex Luthor. Claiming to have been inspired by his "friend," Superman, Luthor has built a Tony Stark-like supersuit and intends to claim the Superman mantle.
Thing is, when they rebooted to DC 52, they didn't kill off the old Superman. They let him escape to the Earth of the new continuity and marry Lois Lane and have a kid, Jonathan Kent. He's been laying low and minding his own business. Until now. He's a little older now. And a dad. And starting to give real thought to what it is that Superman means to the world and to his family and the responsibility and example that sets. Luthor as Superman doesn't sit right with him. So he comes back. And this isn't just a Superman, it's our Superman: the world's biggest boy scout, the pure of heart, charming, old-fashioned heroic Christopher Reeve Superman. He's instantly recognizable... and different and new at the same time.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Kent is now Superboy. But not generic adolescent 15-to-17 year-old Superboy. He's a tween in an S-hoodie and jeans with a good heart but a smart mouth. He's irresistible.
ALSO MEANWHILE... Not only is Superman back, but so is Clark Kent? And not as a secret identity, but as a separate person entirely?
Also, Doomsday is back. So that's... not good.
This is TERRIFIC. My kid fell instantly in love with Superman upon reading these and insisted I read them, too. And I'm glad he did. These are just awesome. They're both a fresh take on Superman and the truest possible continuation of the Superman we know and love. Plus: Superboy!
