The Departure

Text: A badly-done-to super-genius gets his revenge on, and freedom from, the totalitarian world government by escaping IIIIIN SPAAAAACE. Subtext: Neal Asher grabbing you by the shirt collar and screaming THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU VOTE LABOUR!

This book, followed by Zero Point and Jupiter War and related to some short stories, remind me a lot of L. Neil Smith's more febrile works in that their politics are just horrifyingly regressive but everything is so ludicrously painted and overwrought that it mostly ends up being hilariously entertaining.

A prime example of the central rule of UK space opera - "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from torture"
The torture scenes in these books are indeed splendid but there's a lot of filler.
