Wow, has it been ten years? I have read and re-read this book many times since around 2012, and it has survived my latest Kondo-inspired book purge, which is something.

I like the way Gretchen Rubin writes about her life. Many of her little stories and anecdotes have stuck with me, and she shares a lot of interesting things she heard other people say. For a while her blog was a source of interesting stuff to read and blogs/websites to check out.

Incidentally, it was her book that first introduced me to the joys of dedicated uncluttering, years before I discovered Marie Kondo.

I am no longer reading her blog though - I feel that her previously subtle self-promotion has become really over-the-top nowadays. I miss the old blog and the non-celebrity Gretchen.

Posted this while halfway through the book, have since finished it.

I'm gonna reread it and take some notes. There was a lot of actionable ideas. Thinking I'll start august with monthly resolutions following along with the re-read.

It's funny, because in a lot of ways Rubin is super relatable to me (down to not having much success with meditation) so then I would get very surprised when she'd say something revealing her to be very, very different from me. The entire chapter in which she discusses finding the things she most enjoys was like opposite day for me, things she loved I hated and vice versa. But I really enjoyed how she pushed happiness as a project that will look different for each person.

I loved how candid she is about her faults and idiosyncrasies.

"You can choose what you do, you cannot choose what you like to do" has really stayed with me.
