David Lynch interrogates a monkey.

David Lynch grills a monkey in a new short on Netflix.

Filmed in 2016, the 17-minute short was shown for the first time at the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in 2017 and then again at Lynch’s Festival of Disruption one year later. After floating around for a few years, the deep-pocketed benefactors at Netflix have given it a fitting home, where Lynch devotees can watch and rewatch as they obsessively search for clues unlocking its meaning.

Complete ridiculous, and yet somehow still a bit nerve wracking when the ending arrives. The set design and lighting for this did a lot of the heavy lifting making that possible, I'm pretty sure. Lynch is an alchemist.

I couldn't help but think of the Cow Cow Boogie during this.

But I loved it.

TOOTOTABON!

No, it's not a masterpiece, just 17 minutes of semi-non sequiturs followed by a brief song and a hen chase.

Still, somehow they picked just the right poignant looks from that monkey for some lines. I felt sad for little Jack, hopefully not for the wrong reasons.

I mean, there's no reason it can't be both...

This was amazing. I'm not sure if I was supposed to find it as funny as I did, but I just about died laughing on a second watch.
