Book: The Lost Man, by Jane Harper
"The three Bright brothers are the overseers of 3,500 square kilometers of land in Queensland, with hours between each of their homes. It’s a vast, unforgiving environment, and no one ever goes far without a full complement of supplies. When 40-year-old Cameron sets out on his own, ostensibly to fix a repeater mast, he never comes home. His body is eventually spotted, via helicopter, curled up by the stockman’s grave, the source of plentiful, and persistent, local ghost stories. Cam’s older brother, Nathan, and their baby brother, Bub, are as perplexed as the cop who’s come all the way from Brisbane to investigate. What was Cam doing by the grave, and what was his Land Cruiser doing nine kilometers away, still fully stocked with supplies, with the keys left neatly on the front seat?" - Kirkus Review

Book: Broken Harbour
Mick “Scorcherˮ Kennedy is the star of the Dublin Murder Squad. He plays by the books and plays hard, and thatʼs how the biggest case of the year ends up in his hands. On one of the half-abandoned “luxuryˮ developments that litter Ireland, Patrick Spain and his two young children have been murdered. His wife, Jenny, is in intensive care. At first, Scorcher thinks itʼs going to be an easy solve, but too many small things canʼt be explained: the half-dozen baby monitors pointed at holes smashed in the Spainsʼ walls, the files erased from the familyʼs computer, the story Jenny told her sister about a shadowy intruder slipping past the houseʼs locks. And this neighborhood—once called Broken Harbor—holds memories for Scorcher and his troubled sister, Dina: childhood memories that Scorcher thought he had tightly under control. [more inside]
Book: Faithful Place
Third in the Dublin Murder series, this time starring Frank Mackie from book 2, starting what I think of as the second branch of the books -- In the Woods and The Likeness are tied together, and Faithful Place, Broken Harbour, The Secret Place and the Trespasser are as well, but the two groupings are more loosely linked. [more inside]
Book: The Likeness

Cassie looks at the victim, stabbed in the chest and left for dead in a ramshackle rural cottage, and finds her mirror image. Identification reveals the victim’s name is Lexie Madison—the very same handle Cassie once used as an undercover agent. [more inside]

The ABC Murders: Hercule and the new Inspector Season 1, Ep 1
Rupert Grint was the surprise star, here. Malkovich being stilted and precise suits the character of Poirot, but put him together with Crome, they warm up to each other in an organic and compelling way, and it's on Grint's natural talent as a supporting actor. I would watch a series based on Poirot and Crome discussing the weather, so good.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: THE DEAD TALK BACK Rewatch Season 6, Ep 3
Rewatch! One of the sillier movies in MST's rich history, this film was made in the 60s but unreleased until shortly before the episode aired. Krasker is a self-styled occultist with a hilariously dramatic speaking style. He lives in the basement of a boarding house with a collection of "supernatural" artifacts that are laugh-out-loud funny even without riffing. For some reason the police hang on this cut-rate Sherlock Holmes' every word, and consult with him on murder cases, a premises so ridiculous that it demonstrates just how stupid it is when investigatory seances happen in real life. But mostly the movie stalls until its sub-Scooby Doo twist ending. Previously.
Book: Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
A murder mystery which is much more mysterious than it first appears. A fantastical and twisty story where our hero tries to find out who killed (or will kill) Evelyn Hardcastle at a ghastly party at the extremely remote Blackheath House.
Best read without any spoilers (including those right inside this post). [more inside]
Book: The Lost Book of the Grail
In The Lost Book of the Grail, author Charlie Lovett weaves together elements of romance, historical fiction, and mystery into an engrossing novel that is hard to put down. The book chapters alternate between two settings:
- Historical fiction set in a Christian monastery charged with hiding a Grail related artifact from first Viking hordes, and later the British monarchy stamping out undesirable religions.
- A modern day setting of a university professor and Grail enthusiast chasing down clues to the location of the Holy Grail, which he believes is somewhere in the small British university town where he teaches.
