Mystery Science Theater 3000: ATLANTIC RIM  Rewatch   Season 12, Ep 2

Rewatch! The Asylum is an infamous studio I'm a bit conflicted about. It's true, I've seen a lot of their films, despite finding it challenging to make it through a lot of them. Many of them aren't what I'd call good. But they continue to make movie after movie, even after all this time, despite it being a difficult craft, doggedly doing what they want no matter what people tell them. I admire that. And they made Z Nation, which people generally liked. Well, this is more typical of their output: a movie based loosely upon, and named similarly to, a big-budget movie, released straight to disk. This one has pretty unlikable characters. It's the second movie of "The Gauntlet," MST3K's short 12th season. Previously.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Asylum  Season 7, Ep 27

This week from the white void. Trump is beset with October Surprises (contracting COVID, news finally breaks about his tax avoidance, and we find out he had a previously-unknown bank account in China), although his supporters think Hunter Biden's laptop is a thing, entirely because Fox News keeps telling them it is. Trump gets a pass from the press on the final debate because he acted like less of a loon than usual. And Now: The Movie Taste of People On CNBC Is Exactly What You Think It Is. Main story: Immigration, specifically, how the Trump administration has been extraordinarily cruel to asylum seekers trying to enter the US. On YouTube (21m) And Now: Like We Said, The Movie Taste Of People On CNBC Is Exactly What You Think It is.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: ATLANTIC RIM  Season 12, Ep 2

In a world that we are assured bears no relationship with anything created by Guillermo Del Toro, three pilots of experimental, implausibly humanoid giant robots fight against monsters from the ocean. Where do the monsters come from and why are they attacking now? Who knows! What's more important is that our heroes, Black Guy, Woman and Obnoxious Bro, fight the monsters to both the stern disapproval and enthusiastic approval of General Father Figure. At last the crew of the Satellite of Love come up against the fearsome work of The Asylum, makers of mockbusters extraordure. In subplot news, this is the second of the six movies of "The Gauntlet," Kinga's latest ratings stunt, a sequence of films shown to Jonah and the bots back-to-back. They hold up well, even though the movie is exceptionally tiresome. "Flush them the movie!" Episode 1202 is available on Netflix. [more inside]

WWE Raw: The Extreme Rules Go-Home  Season 24, Ep 36

Has it only been three weeks since Payback? I guess so. Since then, we've seen the breakup of C-list faction the League of Nations, a battle royal to determine the #1 contender for the C-list US title, the annual round of C-list firings, and no movement whatsoever on the main storylines (okay, except for the advent of the NewDayLorean). You have to give credit to them for ending the go-home with a women's feud, at least. [more inside]

The Knick: The Golden Lotus  Season 1, Ep 9

Thackery does lots of coke. Everett prescribes an emetic  to someone with an eating disorder. Barrow gets salt water from his loan shark instead of cocaine. Disregarding the evidence in front of his nose, Bertie hits on Nurse Elkins and she gaslights him. Bertie also refuses to admit that Thackery is a hop-head. There is one patient in The Knick who doesn't care that Dr. Edwards is black. Finally, we learn that 'golden lotus' means foot not a portion of a woman's nether regions. ‎ [more inside]
