The series climax takes place against the backdrop of Roarton's annual winter fete and traditional boundary march. Danger is descending on Kieren - Simon believes he's the key to a Second Rising, while an unhinged Gary thinks he is planning a Blue Oblivion attack on Roarton. Meanwhile, Maxine's deepest secret is revealed when she has a public meltdown at the fete. The villagers finally see her for what she really is, but not before tragedy touches Roarton. Kieren is wrongly accused of freeing rabids held at the hospital and is placed under house arrest with a view to returning him to the Treatment Centre in Norfolk unless he confesses. With no support from the family he seeks out Simon, but Amy tells him that Simon has gone to the city. Amy and Philip continue their relationship, secretly fearing she may becoming resistant to the drugs that keep her from descending into her rabid state. In the city Simon has received orders from the Undead Prophet to slay Kieren, in the belief that his demise will trigger the second rising. [more inside]

In a town meeting, Maxine Martin is inquired about the existence of an undead-brothel working in Roarton. She takes advantage of the situation to make a political stand against the undead behaviour and organizes a protest to close the establishment. Meanwhile, Kieren invites Simon to a family dinner, where he accidentally reveals information that leads Simon to believe that he is the first risen.

Kieren kisses Simon, Gary kisses Jem. Jem also comes clean about what she did in the woods. And we meet PDS-suffering Freddie and and his former (?) wife, Hayley.

Kieren's attempt to leave for France are dashed by Maxine's imposition of an Undead travel ban, and the formation of the PDS "Give Back" scheme. There's high school drama with Jem her young class-mates, an undead party (complete with mood-altering ... substances), and Jem reconnects with Gary.

In The Flesh starts its second season with Partially Deceased Sufferer (PDS), Kieren Walker, now in the seemingly PDS-friendly world of Roarton. Well, it's mostly friendly, except for the usual group of anti-rotters, and then there's the new Victus MP Maxine Martin, who comes to visit her territory.
