Official FOX synopsis: "When Terry’s favorite author, DC Parlov (guest star Fred Melamed), returns to the precinct because his latest manuscript was stolen, Terry and Jake convince Rosa to go undercover with them at a fantasy fiction convention to find the culprit. As drama ensues between Parlov and another writer (guest star Rob Huebel), Terry admits that he’s been writing a book of his own. Back at the precinct, Holt, Amy and Charles take a forensics course, but Charles’ big mouth gets him in trouble."

The revelation that Rosa dresses like the heroine of every urban-gothic-fantasy novel was wonderful, and I hope they keep that as a character detail going forward, like her obsession with Nancy Meyers and her secret competitive-gymnastics backstory.

The Diversity in Fantasy Writing panel consisting of 4 or 5 middle-aged white men was an excellent joke.

Any week we want to give Jake not the A-plot would be fine now. Though I love Rosa and Jake interactions. And look who is the actual cover model!

Also, raise your hand if you're like me and the Boyle B-story triggered your residual claustrophobia big time. I don't remember a lot of this subplot, because I spent the whole time mentally reliving the day we made life-masks in my 3rd grade art class.

This one didn't seem like the jokes quite had a chance to breathe, but Rosa dressing like a Gail Carriger character and the diversity panel cracked me up. (I did keep trying to figure out who Moorgil was supposed to be an expy of, since Parlov is mostly GRRM with some Tolkien, but never felt like I could tell.)

Rosa totally is Wednesday Addams.

The B-plot bugged me insofar as it's hard to maintain sympathy with anyone (in this case, Holt and Santiago) who would hide a mistake that apparently puts someone in medical danger… for the sake of hiding a mistake. Dammit, they should have just told the teacher they forgot the lube and worked together to resolve the situation! It's implied that a shower would safely wash it off anyway. No one even bothered to argue that the precinct getting a lab would be "worth it" or whatever; they just acted like the worst thing in the world is getting caught. (Which is disturbingly realistic for police, but I don't want them to be realistic.)

I still loved the moment when Holt draws a smiley face on Boyle.
