Travelers: Traveler 0027
December 27, 2017 6:38 PM - Season 2, Episode 8 - Subscribe

MacLaren and his team are summoned to the formal hearing of Traveler 0027, who is charged with undermining both the Director and the Grand Plan.

*Outside a cabin in the woods, MacLaren and team observe two soldiers getting traveled. When a third soldier approaches and witnesses them mid-transfer, MacLaren gives Carly the order to shoot him. One of the new travelers, 5401, said they needed the third for another traveler, but MacLaren says they'll manage. The new travelers and the team enter the cabin and capture 3 Faction members.
*Marcy cuts their coms out while Trevor and Philip start trying to pull info from their computers, and MacLaren asks where the quantum frame is. Traveler 5401 says that the Director has plans for the captives - a hearing has been ordered and the presence of MacLaren, Marcy, and Trevor will be required.

*At the condo, MacLaren and Kat toast to the sale of their house. They share a kiss, and Kat invites him to stay the night. In the morning after, they trade "I love you"s, and in the hallway a neighbor girl steps out as Messenger to give MacLaren the coordinates to the hearing.

*At Ops, Philip tells Carly he hasn't gotten anything useful from the Faction coms. He also says the timeline is changing so much that his future history knowledge may be becoming obsolete.

*The hearing is in a church, where MacLaren and team are surprised to see Grace (Traveler 0027). After the call for all to rise for the tribunal, the 3 captured Faction soldiers are overwritten - the woman is taken by Traveler 009 to be called 'The Speaker', the soldier with glasses becomes 0029, and the 3rd man is 0017. Trevor notes that they're all programmers, and Grace asks what the hell they're doing in the 21st and who is maintaining the Director, and they tell her they came here as instructed, unlike her, and this hearing is over charges against her of conspiracy against the Director and the high crime of interrupting the Grand Plan.

*Carly does her landscaping work while on coms with Philip, who is having no luck finding anything useful on CCTV footage of locations where the Faction coms were used. Later, she finds her paycheck is too small to cover all her expenses, and asks him for a transfer, and Philip discovers that the markets have shifted in ways he didn't expect from his original historical knowledge and the team finances have taken a serious hit. Later on, he discovers his memories of horserace wins are no longer correct either.

*At the hearing, MacLaren takes the stand and is questioned about how he first met Grace, and he tells about his mission with Ellis and how she used saving Marcy to trick them into helping her reset the Director. Grace interrupts frequently, with her usual charm, but is visibly upset at the news that the Director ordered the hearing.

*David calls Blair to leave her a happy birthday message, but gets sucked into a long conversation where she tries to convince him to join her at a rave to celebrate.

*At the hearing, Trevor takes the stand and admits to interrupting real-Grace's original TELL because he cared about her and wanted to save her, and taking responsibility for interfering with the Grand Plan. Traveler 0029 (glasses) tells them that 0027 froze all transfers for the 4 hours it took her to locate Grace's new TELL, interrupting multiple missions including one that would have prevented a train derailment in Germany, and another that would have thwarted a terrorist attack in England.

*At David's, while having dinner with Marcy, Blair calls, but he lets it go to voicemail. She texts him a selfie of her at the rave, and the quantum frame is visible in the background. While Blair and friend are in bathroom it activates and there's a mass arrival. When David checks his phone while Marcy is in the bathroom, he hears a message from Blair calling for help as she tries to escape the Faction mob by locking herself in a bathroom stall. David rushes out to try to help her and Marcy joins him. They find the rave location quiet and abandoned, with Blair on the floor and in the throes of an overdose. David revives her with an anti-narcotic, and she tells him that while she was in the bathroom she heard everyone screaming, and they attacked her when she came out. Marcy checks David's phone and sees the quantum frame in the photo, and coms to MacLaren with the news.

*At Ops, Philip checks social media for photos of people at the rave, who must all now be Faction.

*At the hearing, it is Marcy's turn on the stand. She admits to feeling that she has lost something in the reset. Grace insists that she didn't do her any real harm, she did what was necessary to save her life.

*While the hearing is in recess, MacLaren calls Kat and they talk baby names. Trevor brings Grace french fries, and a big hug.
Trevor: Wasn't so bad, was it?
Grace: I do feel a slight release of endorphins. Do you have a regular sex partner?

*Grace testifies. She says that she is not the one who corrupted the Director, that she saved it and all of them should be thanking her for saving the future. The Tribunal says they will deliberate and return a verdict tomorrow.

*Philip and Carly go to the home of Stacey Collins, one of the people on camera at the rave. They tell her that they know she's Faction and to cooperate and give them the location of the quantum frame. She says she has no idea what they're talking about, and to go away before she calls the cops. As Philip and Carly argue their next step, they hear the sound of approaching sirens and leave.

*At David's, Marcy brings Chinese food. She kisses him, but David stops her from taking it further, saying he doesn't want to be an experiment for her, that if they make love again he wants it to be because she actually wants him. When she starts to leave, he asks her to stay for dinner and to talk, and she does.

*The next morning at the church, the Tribunal unanimously finds Grace guilty and she is taken to a room for sentencing, where she is left seated in front of some light triangles. The church empties out of everyone but Trevor. Outside the church 0029 offers Marcy an apology for what was done to her. He says his team has been working on recovering host memories, and thinks he can restore her Marcy 1.0 memories, and invites her into his limo. In the car, he coms to tell someone he's returning to Ops with Marcy - it's Stacey Collins, somewhere with the quantum frame.

*In the sentencing room, the Director speaks to Grace on the screens, through a series of dying people's last words. She doesn't understand why it thinks she is guilty, and he tells her "You are one of four candidates, although the probability of guilt is negligible...I have not yet determined who amongst you is the traitor."

*0029 bring Marcy into the room with the quantum frame, but finds all his team dead. Marcy tells him not to bother pretending he wants to help her, she knows he just wants Ellis' code from her brain to get the backdoor into the Director. MacLaren and team rush in and hold 0029 at gunpoint. Back at the sentencing, the Director tells Grace that 0029 has been confirmed as the traitor, and thanks her for saving its life, and tells Grace it will miss her.

*The Team tells 0029 he has been found guilty and will be sentenced immediately, and he is overwritten with a new traveler. MacLaren orders the quantum frame to be destroyed, but notes that he has no idea who killed 0029's team before they arrived.

Grace continues to be the best. Such range in this episode - all her usual obnoxiousness, plus the hilarious hug, and then her sincere love for the Director and heartbreak at his apparent betrayal.

I guess Vincent must be responsible for killing 0029's team, though I'm not sure what his motive is. Maybe he needed something/someone from the quantum frame?

Yeah I'm betting it's Vincent. And I'm betting he's going to take control of the Faction using info from the quantum frame

Ok, I'm confused again.

I presumed that traveler numbers are in incremental numbers. How does 009, 0029, 0017 (and 0027 in the first place) get to come back to the 21st?

So travelers sent to the past are just copies of people in the future? But then that wouldn't preclude them from maintaining The Director.

Is there a way back to the future? But the future has by definition changed.

Also, why did successive transfers into Carrie last episode become more and more rough (to the point where it fails and The Director resorts to using her brother, who wasn't going to imminently die)? Is there a recovery period where it becomes safe to re-travelerate a host?

It couldn't be because Carrie was going to die of an aneurism and each successive transfer was getting closer and closer to the event - but that obviously isn't the case if we go back to the pilot and are told that only actions/decisions leading to death could be averted, not something like a heart attack.

While most traveler numbers seem to be incremental in the order they've been sent to the 21st, so far everyone in the low range has been a specialist or programmer like Grace and the tribunal in this episode, or the old woman engineer 117 from the Helios 685 episode in season 1. So, it seems safe to assume that certain people involved with the Director at a high level, and/or in charge of the training of the rank & file volunteers, got their numbers assigned at the outset of the time travel program regardless of whether/if/when they were going to travel to the 21st themselves.

I don't think we know that Carrie's brother wasn't going to die in the original timeline. I think in the original timeline, they collided in midair and both died from their landings. In the first iteration, traveler 5001 was sent into Carrie moments before the collision. Since no traveler can arrive earlier than the previous traveler sent, 5002 traveled into Carrie after the collision, so now Carrie's body has a head injury from the collision plus overwriting 5001, and by 5007 her brain was mush from being overwritten all those times. (Of course, I'm not sure how the brother survived the collision to be a viable host - it was traveler 5003 that opened the chute for the unconscious brother to keep him from plummeting to his death, but I guess either 5007 managed to open his chute or 5008's traveling into the brother made him regain consciousness.)

I keep enjoying Grace as a character.

Low numbers are programmers, Dxx low numbers are doctor specialists.

I liked the weaving together last words of dying people for the Director to talk to Grace.

As a datapoint about their location, the coordinates given for the trial - 47.6050n 122.3344w - are in Seattle.
