Special Event: 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs 🏒 - Second Round
May 17, 2022 2:25 PM - Subscribe

The second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs kicks off tonight! The two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning take on the best team in the regular season, the Florida Panthers. The Battle of Florida is a repeat of last year's opening round, which featured some incredibly entertaining hockey. In the west, the heavily favoured Colorado Avalanche take on the St. Louis Blues, who won it all just a few years ago. Tomorrow night, the Carolina Hurricanes and their deep squad host the New York Rangers and the best goalie of the regular season, Igor Shesterkin. And in the final game, the first playoff Battle of Alberta since 1991 will be crazy; the Calgary Flames and the best line in hockey take on the Edmonton Oilers, who happen to have the best player in the sport, Connor McDavid.

Look, I'm not neutral here. The Battle of Alberta is one of the great rivalries in sports, particularly because the two cities have underlying rivalries that go back to when they had a few thousand people each, if not sooner. And even though I'm tired of seeing McDavid's prime wasted, he can wait another year. Go Flames!

The Battle of Florida and Avalanche/Blues start tonight and play on odd numbered days; the Battle of Alberta and Hurricanes/Rangers start tomorrow night and play on even numbered days.

Without the Sharks to root for this year, I am hoping for the Panthers to win for one reason - Jumbo deserves to win the cup!

I'm very proud of your emoji usage.
Proud isn't the right word, but I recognize that you did a great job picking them! Especially Washington, which got me to exhale through the nose.

Things in Edmonton are very... Enthusiastic. I stopped following hockey a whole ago, so the only name I know is McDavid.
I did see a highlight reel from one of the games the Oilers won, and I guess there's a really goofy looking guy who looked like he was having lots of fun. The score for that game was very high! Have there been some changes to the rules or goalie gear?

I won't be following this series either, but I hope that whoever wins has at least some gas in the tank for the following rounds!

McDavid is just ridiculously good.

With Toronto out, go Edmonton, Go Blues I guess. Beat Tampa Bay.
(As a youth player, once got to play on the KC Blues, minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, rink. It was a really big rink).

Ha! I was just about to say the same thing. lol WAS. lol sad cats.

Go Flames!

As a nucks fan, I have very mixed feelings about CGY, with so many VAN alum currently on their roster. I've never liked EDM as a team post Gretzky.

The score for that game was very high!

Scoring league-wide has been trending upwards to 6 goals a game (both teams) this season. Don't know when you last followed hockey, but calls against interference (clutch and grab) has gotten better from a couple of decades ago. Fighting is also way way down.

Ah geez, Avs/Blues overtime?!? C'mon Colorado, get it together!

54 shots on goal, Avs take it in overtime!!

As a lifelong Calgarian, my rooting interests are firmly with the Flames; have to admit to a lot of concern about McDavid - I feel like the Flames are the deeper, more structured team, but McDavid can completely change a game on his own, and a best-of-7 game series sometimes turns on just one or two players excelling or falling short. Hoping it will be great hockey.

Wayne Gretzky's so far perfect predictions does not match mine--so sad! I think the Avs can play a cool-headed yet physical enough game to counter St Louis.

I mostly just don't want Tampa to three-peat.

I was at the ballet this evening. It was 3-1 at the intermission. When the show was over, it was 6-2 Calgary. We walked home, 2 km, and by the time we got home it was tied. What is even happening in this game.

This game is the hockey equivalent of a home-run derby in baseball. Why are the goalies even there? Where was this Markstrom when they were playing Dallas?

9-6? Damn the Battle of Alberta is off to a fiery start

Lots of goals and sloppy play; I think both teams were really excited to (a) be in the 2nd round and (b) have open ice (compared to the first round). I think we will see a more structured game tomorrow night.

Tampa Bay with the go-ahead game winning goal with 4 seconds left on the clock! I absolutely thought it was going to overtime.

Tampa Bay leads the series 2-0

Avs lose to St Louis 4-1 😖

But, it's only game two, there's a lot of hockey still to play!

Game 3: St Louis scored first but after an intense couple of periods (with some significant injuries) that Avs win 5-2, with TWO empty net goals!

Alright, it's game 3 of 🔥v. 🛢. Game 2 was sloppy for the Flames, McDavid is a terrifying force of nature.

I'm now assuming that the only two games the Flames will win are game 1 where I was at the ballet and 4 where I'll be camping in the Rockies with no connection to the outside world.

So far, not a great start, the Flames aren't playing well and I spilled an entire can of soda.

The Oilers really have kept the Flames off their game.

Not the Markstrom I was expecting.

Empty net goals are the best! Avs dominate in St Louis 6-3. Game 5 in Denver!

Speaking of empty net goals, Motte's no-look backhand from 2 blue lines away for NYR was a beaut.

Lightning sweep; the champs look like they've fully woken up. Two disallowed goals yesterday, and a 2-0 final.

Speaking of empty net goals, Motte's no-look backhand from 2 blue lines away for NYR was a beaut.

I haven't paid any attention to the Rangers-Hurricanes this round - now with the Panthers-Lightning over, maybe I can catch some.

I hope Kadri's hat trick gave him some good feelings after the recent terrible StL racism. He's got a rep for bad plays but seriously, StL? That one was as a much of a good hockey hit as the one that broke Girard's sternum--and Girard will have a lot more severe repercussions. But yet neither is being investigated by DoPS.

What a frustrating loss to the Blues tonight. The Avs were so close and then just dialed back in the 3rd and were steamrolled. Back to St Louis for game 6; they need to seal the deal!

4 goals in "a minute 11" (!?) in the middle of the second. This Calgary-Edmonton series is nuts.

Fastest 4 goals in Stanley cup history.

Tied 4-4 at the end of the 2nd.

Through 2 periods, the Flames Oilers game has been as exciting and end to end as you could want. Terrified that it's tied and McDavid hasn't had his say yet. Certainly better than the sloppy Flames play of earlier, but not great that our backs are against the wall.

4 goals in "a minute 11" (!?)

I figured as I was sitting watching it that it had to be a record; 4 goals in 1:11 is crazy and I have no idea where this game is going

Welp, guess it's the McJesus bandwagon now.

The SN 'caster team is terrible. Of the desk peeps, Bieksa is standout.

FWIW, my feeling on the intent of the "kicking" rule was misapplied in this case. This isn't much different than any other deflection, be it stick, skate, body, or face.

Otto had enough weight on his non-kicking leg to make it a kicking motion, here the deflecting skate had all of the player's weight on it.

Avs win! Avs advance!! Winning goal made with 5 seconds left in regulation!!

With Shesterkin & Vasilevskiy in the nets, there are going to be a *lot* of 1-0 games in the Eastern Finals.
