A young Parisian woman meets a middle-aged American businessman who demands their clandestine relationship be based only on sex.

Distraught following his wife's suicide, American hotelier Paul (Marlon Brando) becomes transfixed by the beautiful younger Frenchwoman Jeanne (Maria Schneider) when he meets her by chance at an apartment both are attempting to rent. The couple begin an extended but purely anonymous sexual relationship in which they do not even tell each other their names, but it soon becomes clear that the couple's deliberate level of disassociation cannot continue.

Some background on the production of this film. For a lon time it had been the only Bertolucci I managed not to see and I think it will stay that way!

Yeah, I saw this about a million years ago, and I don’t think I could watch it again because of the assault Schneider got from Bertolucci and Brando.

I saw some? most? of this on Showtime when I was about 13 and I still have no idea what I saw. Something about butter and sex, but I wasn't old enough to know how they went together. Its reputation since has suppressed any desire I ever might have had to find out.
