Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Amazing Fantasy

Marvel Animation's latest series features the proverbial webslinger, in a series that doesn't take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's main timeline, although there are some similarities. Peter Parker starts high school and gets bitten by you-know-what, and meets a rich genius who makes him an offer... but it's not who you might think.

The series uses an animation style that's very much inspired by the Silver Age of comics, although it takes place in the modern day. There are also some aspects (Aunt May, generally having a more diverse cast) that harken more to the MCU, and especially the last scene is very much like one in one of the MCU live action movies, but with a twist. Also, Peter's best friend is Nico Minoru, whom you might know from another Marvel series; no clue yet as to whether she is like the comics or previous TV character with the same name.

Well, shit. That got milkshake ducked pretty quick. I hope that Marvel replaces him for subsequent seasons.

Based on just this first episode, I see that the series tries to appear Silver Age in style, but it really doesn't get there. The style is less "comic book" and more "coloring book": firmly delineated areas filled with solid blocks of uniform color. It's not Silver Age at all if you compare it to the works of Steve Ditko or John Romita, who gave their Spiders-Men depth and heft. The animation style isn't terrible, but unlike Into the Spider-verse, it never colors outside the lines. It "illustrates" but doesn't "tell the story."
