The Chain

"Victim. Survivor. Abductor. Criminal. You will become each one." Rachel O'Neill's daughter has been kidnapped. The only way to get her back is to pay the ransom and kidnap another child. This is The Chain, and trying to break it will only mean more terror.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. And if it had ended there, it would have been brilliant. But of course, McKinty had to sell the book to Hollywood, so we get the righteous-revenge part, as eye-rolly as it is, with him giving away the twist too early (to make the reader get to feel smart?). It all comes off as two separate books, with the sudden introduction of world-building background only because the author feels that now he has to start establishing it.

There's a Gn interesting Guardian article on the author of this book. Basically, he worked for years as an Uber driver hoping to make it as a novelist. Then he very publicly quit writing. Then he was offered a contract for this book. The backstory makes me want to read this book!

It looks like Edgar Wright has signed on to direct.
