When a random vamp almost stakes Buffy, she searches for accounts of the deaths of her predecessors, and turns to Spike for information on how he killed two of them. He tells her of his human life as a spineless poet, his siring by Drusilla, and his attraction to the challenge of a Slayer.

Buffy's relationship with Parker deepens, then implodes. Anya returns to town with Xander on the mind. Spike is back, having been dumped by Drusilla again and picked up a newly vamped Harmony as a rebound. They're searching for the presumed mythical Gem of Amarra, a stone that makes vampires invulnerable.

As Buffy prepares to stop Angel once and for all, he finds Acathla - a petrified demon who will suck the world into Hell. Willow finds Jenny's notes on the restoration spell and hopes to curse Angel again before he figures out how to wake the demon. Old friends come and go, uneasy alliances are formed, and visions of Angel's past are revealed.
