I heard this praised on an episode of the Incomparable podcast, and gave it a go -- and I loved it!

Kurt Russell & Kelly Preston are so earnest, and the effects are not terrible (other than some props which seem deliberately cartoonish). The young actors are good, too.

Oh, the soundtrack for this is [chefs-kiss.gif]. Haven't seen the movie since original release (took a mental health day from work and my then-girlfriend and I went to see it), but I have fond memories of it.

I remember hearing that there was a plan for a four movie series (with increasing stakes) that wound up getting shelved when the movie underperformed:

Freshman Year: Save the School
Sophomore Year: Save the City
Junior Year: Save the World
Senior Year: Save the Universe

Also, I've always felt that this film wound up being an influence on things like UA from My Hero Academia.

Such a great movie. We're currenty watching The Flash series, and it's trippy to see that Layla grew up to become a supervillian (sort of).

Also Steven Strait, who went on to The Expanse, Nicholas Braun of Succession and Jim Rash of, like, everything. And a lot of others besides - the casting director could really see talent. A friend of mine was an extra and said it was a lot of fun to work on.

One of the best gags in this movie is Kurt Russell breaking the phone in anger and grabbing a new phone out of a drawer.

I love this movie, too. “Hero.” “Sidekick.” “Sidekick.” “Hero.”
