Nazi captain Klaus Woermann (Jürgen Prochnow) and his soldiers take over an ancient Romanian fortress that seems to have been built not to keep people out, but to keep something in. As mysterious forces begin killing off his men, Woermann's commanding officer Major Kaempffer (Gabriel Byrne) demands answers. The nearby village's priest (Robert Prosky) suggests they retrieve Jewish scholar Theodore Cuza (Ian McKellen) and his daughter Eva (Alberta Watson) from a nearby concentration camp to see if they can uncover the keep's secrets. In 1999, American student Jake Adelstein has relocated to Tokyo and must pass a written exam in Japanese to have the chance to join the staff of a major Japanese newspaper. He succeeds in becoming their first foreign-born journalist and starts at the very bottom. Taken under the wing of a veteran detective in the vice squad, he starts to explore the dark and dangerous world of the Japanese yakuza.

Micheal Man's remake of his own TV series from the 80s, updated for the 2000s with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell to a mixed response from critics and audiences but has been growing in stature since.
