Holmes and Watson investigate a homicide in which the victim was murdered in a manner reminiscent of crimes committed by an infamous and already incarcerated serial killer. Meanwhile, Bell gets tutored by Joan and Sherlock for a police sergeant's exam that could lead to a promotion and a post at another precinct.

Their first case back is about two dead men who look remarkably alike, which leads to a recently thawed cold missing person case and a tech company that specializes on facial recognition. With Kitty gone from his brownstone, Sherlock finds himself in the doldrums, digging through old cold case files and talking to a variety of people to keep his interest. When the wife of a lawyer shows up and wants Sherlock to do his "P.I. stuff" on her possibly cheating husband who she hasn't seen in 48 hours, Sherlock agrees to take on the missing person case to get out of his slump, pulling Joan into the case. While working together, Sherlock comments on Joan's dissatisfaction with her relationship with Andrew, which Joan tries to dismiss. And then the case takes some twists and turns, as does Joan's relationship with Andrew.
Elementary: The One That Got Away Season 3, Ep 12
Sherlock and Joan increase their efforts to determine the relationship between Del Gruner and the deaths of a young lady who was abused and branded and a man involved with sex trafficking, while Kitty begins to unravel due to the imminent threat to her safety. The origin of Sherlock and Kitty’s relationship is revealed in a series of flashbacks.

Watson starts her new job as an investigator for an insurance firm, but ends up joining forces on a case with Sherlock when a threat to Kitty emerges.

When a nurse Watson used to work with asks for her help finding their missing acquaintance, the missing woman's trail leads Watson and Holmes to another person who has disappeared. Despite his sponsor's concerns, Sherlock struggles with his sobriety, finding the recovery process monotonous.

Sherlock, Kitty, and Joan investigate the murder of a Highway Patrol officer, whose sidearm has been replaced with an airsoft gun, and uncover a connection to a wanted arms dealer. Meanwhile, Sherlock deals with a fellow recovering addict who is blogging comments Sherlock makes at his group meetings.

After months overseas, Sherlock returns to New York, unexpected, unannounced, and with a surprise in tow. In his absence, Joan Watson has continued to work as a consulting detective for both private clients and the NYPD. Sherlock and Joan begin to work out the terms and boundaries of their revamped relationship while Joan, Gregson, Bell, and Sherlock struggle to close a case that has frustrated Joan and the police for months.
