Detectorists: Season 3 Episode 1
November 8, 2017 4:32 PM - Season 3, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Comedy series about two metal-detecting friends. Lance's flat isn't his own, Andy's stuck with the mother-in-law. The dark cloud of a solar farm threatens the tranquillity.

thanks for the heads-up on this! such a delightful series. such melancholy and yet, so funny. that musical interlude at the end was creepy and beautiful.

I hope this gets to Netflix soon.

This was a perfect episode, from the Apprentice-style beginning, to the giggling members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Society at the mention of deeper penetration in a moist trench, to the haunting ending. Wonderful.

Just after I watched it, I caught up with George Clarke's Ugly House to Lovely House, this week in Colchester (which is close to where the fictional Danebury is). As the foundations were being dug for the house, they had to get the local archaeologist in to make sure there weren't any Roman artefacts or ruins underneath - Colchester being one of the first Roman settlements in Britain. I swear to God, the Colchester Museum archaeologist was the absolute spitting image of Andy/Mackenzie Crook. You couldn't make it up.

I'm just here to, I don't know, up the comment count? Detectorists is unassailably perfect and I will not hear a word of dissent under any circumstances. But we've decided to wait a few weeks so we can binge all at once. I'll be back. Leave the lights on.

My besties and I have been eagerly awaiting this... we squeed with joy when we heard about the third season. I couldn't resist and had to find a stream of the first episode. It was like seeing old friends. I adore the little flashback/backstories they do about the treasures, and I loved the effect with the trees. Sheila is one of my favorites (and the actress is Emma Thompson's sister). I totally agree with "unassailably perfect".

I'm excited for this season, sad to see the show end. What a gentle, humanistic show. It's been a balm for this terrible year.

So weird, that magpie song had popped into my head a few days ago, I'd searched spotify and been listening to the Unthanks version of it. Now it's here!

oo. That song. Eerie.

I’m guessing Mackenzie Crooke has a thing for folk music?

I've loved this series from the start so I'm disappointed that it's the last series but so very glad that it was made and looking forward to seeing what all of the cast do next.

Lance mentions Nick Drake performing with his back to the audience in series 1, so I think probably. I'm happy that this show introduced me to Johnny Flynn, because he's really great. I have several of his albums now (and yes I did download the Detectorists single).

We've watched the first two episodes of this series now, but have paused so we can collect a few more before starting in again. It's still perfect.

The Diana Rigg sightings are the real treasure.
