Louie and Amia connect.

Okay, I have to ask: Is "Jasmine Forsythe" something? It seems way too specific, but I don't get it.

I looked it up but couldn't find anything definitive. It does make me giggle. Poor LeBron. And the rest of the Miami Heat. And 12,000,000 other people.

Louie's indecision is going to bite him in the ass again, huh?

Holy Jesus. I'm not caught up on the whole Elevator saga, but at this point they could have just retitled the series "Elevator".

The Elevator of Doom did make another featured appearance in this episode.

It is a bit much. Seems to me like maybe it was an idea for a feature that he's stretched out in his show, an avenue that he can guarantee it will be completed on. (which I think was the case for the multiple part Late Show run last season, too)

I do like it because it kinda cements the idea that the individual episodes exist solely on their own, unless explicitly noted otherwise.

But I also would have been fine with 1 non-Elevator episode and 1 Elevator part each week for the duration of the season.

I like it because it really hammers home that our lives aren't these discrete stories that we tell each other later -- in the middle of these big dramatic sweeping romance moments, you still have little stuff like one of your buddies telling some long pointless hilarious story at work. It doesn't take away from or add to the one thing to have the other going on, they're just happening.

I really think these episodes are all part of Jane's dream.

The news segments point pretty heavily to Jane's dream plus the other little weird fantasy / unhinged elements like Louie screaming out the window or smashing the piano, her magic ability on violin, or just the entire character of the asshole-yoda doctor... but there's a lot of examined adult stress stuff that I don't think would fit as a child's dream. I can't see a little kid having a point of reference for the ill-advised sexual encounter and morning awkwardness.

I kinda like the idea of it being Jane's dream, but the show has always had these fantasy elements -- the very first show had a girl fleeing from Louie's kiss into a waiting helicopter, after all.

asshole-yoda doctor

Played by Denny Dillon, a member of the doomed Jean Doumanian SNL cast of 1980-81.

These episodes lately make me regret all the time I am wasting on German, I should obviously be learning Hungarian. I get the "He doesn't know what she is saying, maintain that perspective for the audience thing" but damn if I don't just want subtitles SO VERY BADLY.

Speaking of which, am I wrong in my impression that Amia told Louie that he was an inadequate lover right before she left? Or was she saying that it was a mistake to have sex because of the other circumstances?

The Todd Barry "My typical day" sequence was sublime.

I don't really wanna post the translations here because they might be spoilerish to some, but it's possible to find them on reddit for anyone who is interested.

My impressions of what she said were not far from yours, though.

Here's a thread with most of her lines translated if you dare! If you are expecting any hidden gems or jokes, you might be disappointed. It's actually really plain stuff and you could probably write the subtitles yourself instantly just on your immediate rough-draft instincts.

THIS IS REAL LIFE

What an outstanding show. The scene with young Louie and his young wife felt really truthful.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more internet chatter about the scene where Louie pulls in Amia as she is trying to leave and keeps rejecting her goodbyes. I really wanted them to get together, but then that scene had me cringing and looking away and saying, "Louie, no!"

I've been thinking about where this arc will go for the final episode. I think it would be super interesting, and worthy of being the conclusion of a 6-part epic, if it did end up with a confused meditation on date rape. This is half prediction and half fanfic, but I'd like to see something like the following: Louie goes to visit Amia the next day, but finds only Ivanka there. Ivanka says something like, "Amia told me you... oh, what's the word?... you raped her." She isn't judgmental... it's clear that there's a language barrier that caused her to choose that word instead of another. But Louie is horrified. He tries to argue against it, but whenever he describes the scene to his friends ("Did she say no?" "Uh, yeah, many times. But it wasn't that kind of no!"), they're like, "dude, Louie, you raped her." And Louie has to cope with this knowledge as Amia leaves for Hungary, disappointed at what Louie forced upon their relationship.

They probably won't go this way. But I can imagine it happening. I can imagine Louis wanting to write a script in which he arguably date rapes a girl, and that he knew he could only pull that off at the end of a long series of episodes so that you're kinda on his side when it happens but then horrified along with him at the later revelation.
