I enjoyed this film, but I prefer the director's other movie The Loved Ones. But man dude makes some seriously brutal films.

The characters in this film were really sweet and charming, and I loved the the father daughter bonded over heavy metal but that wasn't enough for her to actually expect him to father, something he repeatedly let her down at. That felt very real, as did her escape from the kidnapping.

I wasn't especially interested in Ray Smilie, the villain; that stuff was sort of flat for me. But otherwise a really solid horror film that I liked a lot.

Other than going a little hard on the "corporate art is evil" drum and being just a skosh too pleased with itself for making heavy metal a contrast to the evil and Satanic (what a twist!), this movie was full of good creeps and solid characterization. It helped me to care about the people even when events started bordering on the ludicrous instead of ominous.

Pruitt Taylor Vince can play this kind of weirdo as many times as he wants and I will probably watch every iteration.

This got pretty upsetting but not in an exploitative way. More because they did the work to make us like this family. Well, the dad and daughter. The mom got a more cursory development.

When the daughter said, "You swore on my grave!" that was really heartbreaking.
