So, did Roger think he was throwing water on the fire to put it out, or did he know it was alcohol and he was essentially carrying out a mercy killing?

I think he knew.

Is this the first episode with no Jamie or Claire?

I'm sure he knew it was alcohol. He's been with them a while.

I just read an interview with Richard Rankin on Vulture and it was supposed to be gunpowder.

I was not very enthusiastic about this episode while it was happening, but only an hour later did I realize Jamie & Claire weren't even in it. I hope they rally for season 5 because this one has not been great.

That doesn't even make sense in light of the title card that prominently features the Mohawk drinking from a barrel of whiskey. At first I figured we'd see the sequence from the book with Jamie, Claire, and Ian using whiskey to bargain for Roger. Then after watching the episode I connected it to the barrel Roger throws.

I suppose there was some kind of parallel connection with the gunpowder used to blow up the jail and this, but you'd think there'd be some kind of allusion to the Mohawk having gunpowder elsewhere in the episode.

Much like the use of Ray Charles music during Bonnett's attack on Claire & Jaimie, I found the use of the 'Adagio' instrumental distracting during the burning sequence. That will always be the Platoon music for me, so when the music started it startled laugh out of me. (I mean, not that Platoon makes me laugh, just that it was so unexpected and incongruous.)

We do see Jamie briefly when Lord John is reading Jamie's letter to Brianna.

But I think the episode earlier in the season with Brianna wandering the highlands and Roger wandering around in culottes didn't have Jamie or Claire.

…Not a professional prison stormer - but I believe it’s considered standard practice to blow a hole in the wall with gunpowder, *before* freeing the inmates - not afterwards. Also: working by night rather than in mid afternoon can be a useful route to a longer career.
