As teen/Christmas rom-coms go, I thought this was cute.

Everyone sort of had these attenuated backstories, like I never really got a real sense of the characters, for some reason. So something didn't succeed, somewhere. But it was totally fun and watchable.

Highly recommend and I say this as a 30 something dude. Smart writing and hilarious. Some of my favorites:
-The wide music genres. The song Whole of the Moon is a gem.
-The name of the Waffle restaurant
-The Harry Potter reference
-Joan Cusack's character of the quirky tow truck driver
-The diverse cast

Just watched it. I will never forgive Tobin for turning down the opportunity to play/sing "Sound and Vision." That said, the movie was cute, the actors likable, and a pleasant way to spend a couple hours. Recommended.

Also want to add: for a movie of this type that focuses on a bunch of small stories that intersect, it accomplished the rare feat of having all of the stories be interesting enough to care about. I wasn't annoyed with anyone and waiting to get back to a story I cared about.

Is it me or was this an empire records reference?

screencap

it very much feels like it.

I kinda enjoyed it btw.

homage, that's the word I was looking for.

I did find myself thinking of Empire Records (and Can’t Hardly Wait) when I was posting this movie’s thread, but I wasn’t sure if there really was a similar vibe or if it’s just that I haven’t seen all that many teen-ensemble-rom-coms.

This felt like a demo pilot you'd reshoot if you got a series order. Netflix seems to be fishing for the minimum level of agreeabilty required to get an audience. It's like they want to match Hallmark Channel production and dramaturgical values but with better representation. They squandered a good cast on something completely forgettable. This appears to be a trend for them.

I thought this was super cute! And yay for normal LGBT stories.

We were all so icked out by the Julie character looking so young in comparison with the Stuart Bale character; not that Shameik Moore is so old-looking but Isabela Merced looked about 12, especially in that hideous striped turtleneck. When they went in to kiss the whole room shrieked "NO NO NO!"

Aside from that, this was a fun Boxing day watch, and of course any Joan Cusack appearance is worth its weight in gold.
