This is a Disney+ original holiday movie that begins with Santa Claus dying.

Merry Christmas everybody!

I never saw it, but isn't that how The Santa Clause starts?

It is! Also terrible there! And with Tim Allen instead of Anna Kendrick, as if that were a fair trade.

That's not to say this is awful though. It's Elf-lite. With Anna Kendrick. And for real, the "has Anna Kendrick" thing is obviously a major plus.

I thought this was fun fluff. Great cast (in addition to the top-billed stars, Julie Hagerty doing her Airplane! schtick was perfect for this version of Mrs. Claus) and the plot moves along pretty well without a villain, or even a real antagonist. Also the whole premise is that "Santa Claus" is a family business that passes from parent to child, which is way less uncomfortable than the idea that it follows Highlander rules.
