Insecure: Lowkey Feelin' Myself
April 13, 2020 8:09 PM - Season 4, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Issa Rae's understated half-hour comedy about black life, sex, relationships and career in LA is back for Season 4 on HBO (the full season premiere is also up on YouTube for free). Issa's partnership with Condola, Molly's feelings for Andrew, and Issa's friendship with Molly all hit bumps in the road as plans for a big community event start to take off.

I am not looking forward to the Issa/Molly split that's coming up. Their friendship is the bedrock of the show for me, so this is going to be a painful season. Molly saying the Issa didn't have to make her life so messy though? Whew. Projection.

But! Does it mean that I get more Kelly? "Bring your ass over here, you Bill-Murray-looking" I could never have enough Kelly.

I am so happy that there's a new show-within-a-show this season.

Yeah, I'm not sure about Molly's weird over-reaction. I mean, she's had this rigid way of judging men at times, which I like when it's fierce like her shoving Nathan away from Issa on her birthday in the previous season finale, but it really felt like she grew in her relationships last season, with men and with Issa, and this jealous drama felt like an immature step backwards for no clear reason.

I still think Insecure is one of the sharpest, most realistic and funny drama/comedy shows around. There's an easy naturalism to the dialogue, the way it's filmed, the character arcs, and...well, almost everything. I just went back and watched the first 2 episodes of season 3, which were as fantastic as I remembered so I'm gonna rewatch the rest. Even the sociopolitical stuff is handled in a smooth, thoughtful, character-driven way that makes points without seeming preachy. This season premiere felt a bit stiff and forced, but still had enough smart, fun moments to keep my hopes up for the rest.

Also, it's very re-watchable and holds up well.

I've been rewatching Season 3 and you're right. Even better the second time around. I may do the whole series again; it's so well-made in so, so many ways.
