Avatar: The Last Airbender Rewatch (and other Avatar issues)

We are officially six days away from the series conclusion of Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and while the tears will sting our eyes, there is a fine pain reliever available: Avatar: The Last Airbender rewatch!

The Last Airbender is generally available on Amazon Prime, but I'm unaware of any other locations for full episodes. It consists of 61 episodes over three books (seasons), which obviously means, if we watched one episode a week, it would take over a year to go through the show. It would seem two episodes a week would make for a better pace, especially as there are several two parters. The question also remains, post two episodes at once or split them up, such as one Monday and the other Thursday/Friday (these are all just brain storming ideas)?

What would be the most fun and convenient manner to rewatch the show that started it all?

Additionally, Books 1 and 2 of Korra never made it on to Fanfare. Would there be a desire to rewatch those two seasons first and then rewatch ATLA or journey through ATLA and then top it off with Korra?

All thoughts and perspectives definitely appreciated!

My suggestion would be to first do a rewatch of ATLA and then Books 1 and 2 of Korra.

I would think 1 post a week would be a little slow, but maybe that's just me.

And you can't post two episodes at once, I think it's against the rules of Fanfare ?

I shall definitely not turn this down, thanks!

And you can't post two episodes at once, I think it's against the rules of Fanfare ?

I'm not sure about rules, per se, but the mechanics don't exist to allow two episodes in one post. When we had our weekly two episode release Korra shows, we did simply drop two posts at once, one for each episode. That isn't a problem.

I think two episodes a week, given we're talking 22+ minutes per episode, isn't anything close to a difficult schedule to keep on (in all seriousness, it'll be difficult NOT to jump ahead - which you can do, but you'll have to wait for the discussion!). I do find dropping two episodes at once kind of distracting, as the natural tendency is to focus more on the second episode, as it's the freshest in mind. What y'all think?

A) Two episodes posted on the same day once a week; or

B) Two episodes posted on separate days once a week?

I'd go for two episodes posted on separate days of the week. Maybe Wednesday and Saturday ?

Yaah! I liked this show when I first watched it, then I didn't see it for ages, so I haven't watched along with this latest season/iteration.

I'm down for a couple episodes a week, especially as they are only ~30 minutes each.

Two a week is a good pace. The only problem is that means it won't last all year. :)

I'd rather have two episodes posted on separate days once a week. I've always felt like posting two episodes at once just neutered discussion in both threads. Wednesday/Saturday sounds good to me.

Oh, and I also think Books 1 and 2 of Korra should come after ATLA. It'd be nice to look back on them with some distance and perspective.

A'ight, so far, preferences appear to be leaning toward two episodes a week, posted on different days, be it Wednesday/Saturday or some other suitable combination.

Start dates.... Mid-January? Provide a 30 day period of mourning for the end of Korra? Sooner?

We definitely are gonna need a mourning period. So mid-January sounds good.

But Wednesday/Saturday might not be ideal - the Saturday one might get ignored because, y'know, weekend. We can't slack off at work talking about Avatar. So maybe Monday/Thursday? Or something like that?

I'm excited for this, 1 - 2 episodes a week starting in January sounds great. We also should watch at least the last three, or probably the last four episodes all at once, as I'm pretty sure stopping in the middle of Sozin's comet is impossible. That's ages away though.

Oh, and I'd rather start with AtLAB, as I wasn't that impressed by early Korra. Also, would people prefer a rewatch or a firstwatch? I've not got any strong preferences, I've seen them all multiple times, so I guess I'd rather have the chance to talk about the wider universe etc, but if anyone's watching for the first time, I'm also happy to keep my mouth shut.

Updates: The powerful mods have added ATLA to the list of shows, so we will be ready to go next year. Woot.

Weekly Schedule Preferences:

1) Monday / Thursday

2) Wednesday / Saturday

3) Tuesday / Friday

I think we've had support for two of those so far, but more input is always a good thing!

Ned G brings up a good question: Rewatch or First Watch?

The difference being, spoilers vs no spoilers in the discussion of the episodes.

Would it be a good idea to have threads dedicated to the other two part episodes as well? E.g. The Boiling Rock, Parts I and II, instead of posting each part separately?

The difference being, spoilers vs no spoilers in the discussion of the episodes.

Avatar ended six years ago.

I am only saying this because I really want to nerd out in the comments.

I vote for rewatch and a Monday/Thursday schedule. I also vote for keeping the two-parters together instead of posting separately. I think it splits discussion up weirdly otherwise, especially if it's a rewatch.

Another vote for keeping two-parters together; they're generally written to flow that way, and weren't most of them aired as single longer episodes in the original run?

I'd vote for a rewatch as well so that we can analyze to our hearts' content, unless there's a real groundswell of folks who haven't seen ATLA and are interested in it. (This idea was born out of the Korra threads, though, and I can't imagine there are a lot of people participating in those who haven't seen ATLA.)

It definitely makes sense to keep the two parters (Sozin's comet is essentially a four parter, so perhaps that might be broken up into two episodes per day...but we have a ways before we get there.)

It seems rewatch is the obvious designation for now.

Any more preferences on the day/day schedule?
posted by Atreides at 11:55 AM on December 16, 2014

I've seen the entire AtLA series at least, oh, five times now. I'm actually in the middle of my current rewatch.

...since Avatar is apparently my favorite TV show of all time, sure. Let's do another rewatch! Once more with feeling!

I vote for either Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday -- weekends are kind of slow around here.

Guess what we forgot?

February 21st, 2005 was the first time they showed "The Boy In The Iceberg".

Should we hold back until then to make it the 10-year anniversary special?

Gawsh, that would be perfect.

By the way, that's a Saturday. How about a special post to celebrate the anniversary on Saturday, then pick up Monday / Thursday viewing schedule.

Maybe that frees up January to watch the unaired pilot and/or the chibi head shorts?
posted by weston at 1:38 AM on December 21, 2014

They definitely can be, though aren't the chibi head shorts only on the dvds? Are those on Youtube, too? (Discussion of these may also need to be pocketed inside the regular episode discussions)

I'm a new watcher, but I wouldn't mind a rewatch (instead of first watch) format, as I know I'm fashionably late in catching up with this. I watch them streaming online and I'd definitely prefer Monday/Thursday.

FWIW, I've only seen a handful of episodes of ATLA Book 1 so far (I'm much more familiar with LOK) and am totally okay with a rewatch, too. Not sure if I'd be able to participate as much as I'd like every week (because of time constraints) but I'd follow the discussions when possible.

Is it generally okay to comment in older FanFare threads if I catch up on them later?
posted by rangefinder 1.4 at 6:19 PM on December 25, 2014

Absolutely okay to comment. I always check my "recent activity" tab so I'm always on alert for comments on older threads, but Fanfare specifically does not close their episodes just for this purpose of allowing commentary later on.

So right now, here's what I think will be how we do things:

1) This will be a rewatch.

2) New episodes will be posted twice a week, Monday and Thursday.

3) The rewatch will begin on February 21, 2015, a Saturday, and then pick up on Monday, February 23.

4) IDEA: If the pilot is still available, one of us Avatar fanatics can post it as part of an FPP celebrating the 10th anniversary of the show, and could also include the chibi shorts if they're also available. It could also serve as a chance, under the fold, to mention that in celebration of the 10th anniversary, the rewatch will commence.

As a head's up, we're just shy of the mark of being a month away from the rewatch!

Thanks for the reminder!

I just found out (thanks, tumblr) that all three books of ATLA are now available for streaming from the Nicktoons website, as a special anniversary feature. Full episodes with ads. (Not sure how long they will be up, though...)

That's great to hear. Otherwise, I think Amazon Instant Video /Prime are the only other legal place to watch the show online. Thanks!

FYI, the entire series is available on Netflix in the UK. I can't wait for Feb 21st!

Hey Atreides and Katemonkey - I don't check FanFare every day. Could you guys use the same tag so I can find posts I miss? Maybe #AvatarTheLastAirbender?
