Ghosts (UK): Series 1
November 24, 2020 5:16 AM - Season 1 (Full Season) - Subscribe

From the folks behind Horrible Histories, Ghosts is comedy cast from a very Blackadderian mold.

A young married couple, Alison and Mike, unexpectedly inherit the vast but crumbling Button House from a 99-year-old distant female relative of hers. The House is haunted by numerous squabbling ghosts from across the ages that died on its grounds, who are invisible and intangible to the living.

After an 'accident,' Alison awakens from a coma to discover not only can she see the house's resident spirits, but that due to their finances, she and her husband are just as trapped in Button House as the departed.

I first saw this off the back of a seat on a British Airways plane last year and was frustrated that I couldn't watch the rest of the series. Luckily (well, depending on how you feel about the current state of streaming), it turned up on HBO Max last month!

My house has long enjoyed Horrible Histories as a semi-education diversion for our son that Mom and Dan can watch too and we found Ghosts to be much the same. Madcap comedy, long rambling approaches for a particular payoff, and some surprising heartfelt turns.

(Robin is best, btw.)

Seconding Robin being the best character.

I really liked this. For some reason I took against it based on no evidence whatsoever (I think I thought it was a Rentaghost ripoff?) so only just watched it last month. Very sweet, fun, family-friendly viewing.

I have such a soft spot for Mike. He's just a kind hearted doofus who is way, way out of his comfort zone, but away he goes, nonetheless. Just doing the best he can with all three of his brain cells.

And I adore the plague pit ghosts. Just ... hanging out for a couple of centuries.

All the ghosts have such lovely, bittersweet stories. Even Fanny, who largely annoys the shit out of me, has her moments of gentleness. Robin's is particularly sad, but Pat's is way more tragic at its heart than on first pass.

It's just good. There's a second season, too, as well as a third in development.

Weirdly, I only just watched this after it was recommended by Mike Stoklasa on Half In the Bag. I watched the first series, then realised my wife might like it, too, so I'll try it on her tonight and see if it takes. As far as I'm concerned, it's teh loveliness, and thanks, Mike!

I just started watching this and am enjoying it immensely. I think I landed there after seeing Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Katy Wix on Stath Lets Flats; and then combined with them two having appeared on Taskmaster, which Lolly Adefope and Charlotte Ritchie had also been on, the algo just seemed to make sense that it was something I should try out. The rest of the cast fills this out to make it a really stellar ensemble piece. I'm only three episodes in, and I'm looking forward to consuming the rest of this series at a moderate pace.

[I hadn't even thought of checking out the US version of this—we seem to screw up any TV show we've imported from the Commonwealth... So, just now, having read the (surprisingly positive) reviews, I think I'll pass and just stick with this for now.]
