Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Health Care Sharing Ministries
June 29, 2021 4:23 AM - Season 8, Episode 17 - Subscribe

Another episode from the white void, will it be with us much longer? Senate Republicans rejecting a voting rights act, because awful. Republicans continue to push wildly incorrect voter fraud claims, including something stupidly called ItalyGate. And Now: On The Occasion Of His Departure From C-SPAN, One Last Salute To The Most Patient Man On Television. Main story (23 minutes): Health Care Sharing Ministries are a way that some use to get out of the penalties for not having health insurance in the US. But they are not insurance, are much less regulated, and in some places like Florida are crazy easy to set up. So easy that LWT did just that, in Florida, spinning off their old church Our Lady Of Perpetual Exemption, called Our Lady Of Perpetual Health, and their new "plan," JohnnyCare, to demonstrate how little health care an HCSM can get away with. Features the return of "Wanda Jo Oliver," John's "Mega Wife," (aka Rachel Dranch).

Epic stunt.

I kinda want a JohnnyCare mini first-aid kit.

I guess you have to live in Florida to "buy" one.

Yeah, and they were limited numbers. I took a peek on ebay, maybe I'll try again in a week or two.

I was glad for a stunt episode. I know they did the sponsored content stunt not so long ago, but I feel like overall those have been rarer lately (no doubt for good production related reasons!). I find ending on a ludicrous parody of whatever they're skewering goes a long way towards balancing the "why are people like this" downer of whatever the main story is.

When the main story started, I could have sworn they'd already covered health sharing ministries, but I seem to have gotten my comedy news programs mixed up - I must have been thinking of last spring's Sam Bee episode.

Anyway health sharing ministries are terrible, the USA's healthcare system is terrible, but I always like seeing this Rachel Dratch character.
