Gus tries to impress a group of cool kids from Glandus High, while Luz and Amity journey into the most dangerous section of the library.
Gus is starting to feel like his Illusion specialty is useless and joins a group of students from Hexside's rival school in a quest for stones that amp the power of any witch (except illusionists). Luz lends some of her glyph spells to help him impress the other kids but eventually learns that his own power is impressive enough. Luz goes searching for the journal of the human who once lived in the Boiling Isles. Amity helps, and when they are caught, is fired from her Library job. Luz (offscreen) quests to get the job back and is rewarded by a kiss that no doubt had Lumity shippers screaming loud enough to scare the neighbors.

It would explain his desire for the door to the Human Realm.
