Metal Lords (2022)

For teenage misfits Hunter and Kevin, the path to glory is clear: Devote themselves to metal. Win Battle of the Bands. And be worshipped like gods.

There is nothing new in this movie. All the teen movie tropes are there. Yet, they get the metal right, really right, and it all comes together after a slow start as a sweet and fun high school dramedy flick, with a really killer soundtrack engineered by musical director Tom Morello.

I enjoyed this movie; I think I watched it only because I wanted something I didn't have to think about at the end of a work week, and it fit the bill perfectly. I didn't realize Morello was the musical director, but it tracks.

What I posted to FB after watching it:
For my metal friends who have Netflix: check out Metal Lords. It's a cute movie about high school misfits, there's a Battle of the Bands, and some pretty cool blink-and-you'll-miss-'em guest stars. Not going to change the cinematic universe, but an enjoyable hour and a half that might make you happy. And lord knows we need more of that.

I watched it a couple months ago and I don't remember too many specifics other than I enjoyed it.

It's worth it for the hot tub scene alone.

I wanted to like it but I made it only about 20 minutes in.

I liked it. It shows that they have Tom Morello producing—they got all the guitar gear right, which is rare in a movie.

I liked it too--it does what it set out to do, and does it pretty well. And it treats mental health and addiction with more subtlety and nuance than you'd expect from a movie about metalhead teenagers.

(I'm also amused that Tom Morello executive-produced a Netflix movie and it was a teen coming-of-age movie instead of, like, a documentary about fracking or something.)
