Toby won't let Rachel's inconsiderate, and early, drop-off stop him from keeping a date with a woman he's met online.

I wasn't expecting to like this show as much as I did. Eisenberg seems to have dispensed with his long-time verbal tics for the role, and is absolutely fabulous in it. The pacing of the series, the playfulness of the camera, and the seduction of Lizzy Kaplan's voiceover all make the series singular and appealing, despite its clear Roth/Bellow/Updike/Allen sensibilities.

I've been so excited for this show, since I really loved the novel! And I was really happy to see that the results are so naturalistic, they kept it pulled back from the broader performances that we've gotten from Eisenberg and Kaplan, and even Danes, in the past.

The Roth/Bellow/Updike/Allen sensibilities are definitely there but also set up to be beautifully undercut by things like the foregrounding of Toby's parenting, the tension between the affluence of his environment (and its effect on his kids) vs. his social conscience and medical vocation, and the empowered women he's hooking up with. From what I've seen so far, I think we are in good hands with this story, coming as it does from the brilliant mind and experience of the novel's author, Taffy Brodesser-Akner.
