Haynes does his best Douglas Sirk impression.

I liked it, but probably don't think about it as often as I do Safe.

[edit: Oh, I forgot the trailer.]

I own a DVD copy of this movie and have watched it more times than I can count. My first love turned out to be gay, so I suppose I relate to Cathy Whitaker's pain.

The set and costume design is fabulous. Julianne Moore was pregnant when she made this movie and her waistline grew ten inches, from 26" to 36", over the course of the shoot. They hid it admirably well, though before I knew about Moore's pregnancy I did find myself thinking that some of her dresses weren't very flattering.

I'm always struck by how much this movie is like the movies made in the fifties rather than the movies of its own time, from the direction to the acting to the writing (i.e., the characters imply what their problems are rather than talking explicitly about them), and yet at the same time it's a movie that would never have seen the light of the day at the time.
