When their plans for an exotic vacation fall apart, unmarried couple Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) must spend Christmas Day trudging around to a quartet of family get-togethers. While Brad counts the hours till he can escape the onslaught of crazy relatives, Kate begins to wonder about her own choices and ponders whether her family members are so crazy after all

Great premise, great cast. I really expected this to be my kind of Christmas trash.

It's really pretty underwhelming.

Sort of interesting to see the five minutes that Jon Favreau was ripped, though.

I think the RT score is not deserved at all. I suspect it has to do more with the people (read men and boys) doing the rating than the movie itself.

It's a fine movie. It's not a genius piece by a renown auteur, but it's watchable. Actually, it's a bit more than that. It's one of those movies that despite its many ups and downs never fails to earn a laugh from a mixed (assorted genders and ages) crowd. It has been years since I've sat down and watched the whole thing, but if I'm flipping channels and I come across it, it usually stays on.

A middling yet surprisingly re-watchable Christmas comedy, especially considering the time period when it was made (in my opinion, maybe the single worst decade for mainstream Hollywood comedies.) At the very least, it's head and shoulders above similar holiday crap that came out of that era—just try making it all the way through Deck the Halls or Christmas With the Kranks, I dare you!
