Nick's success on the road infuriates Steve, who turns to Ray to spy on him. As Steve reaches his breaking point with Nick, Irene reaches hers with her husband.
Steve has never really had his (misplaced) confidence validated, and I'm seeing a lot of "faking it until making it" here, despite accidentally making it already.
It's total cringe when he tries hard for want of validation instead of leaning back and enjoying his success.
Not the best mindset to be in when abusing cocaine, which kind of removes all self doubt.

Steve is just the worst liar. I enjoyed his rage at the racist, classist bullshit from the feeb, but he’s just so bad at covering up, it undercuts everything. I was honestly surprised Irene didn’t twig right away—if she didn’t love him, she would have realized all his casual questions were practically screaming “I had him killed.”
