Hellhole (2022)

In 1987 Poland, a police officer investigating mysterious disappearances infiltrates a remote monastery and discovers a dark truth about its clergy. In Polish, with subtitles. Currently streaming on Netflix.

I didn't expect much from this one but ended up loving it. It seems for about the first hour like a standard 5/10 atmospheric horror movie, dark, unsettling and a bit gross, but ultimately No Big Deal. Then it zigs a few times and zags without losing the atmosphere and pretty much sticks the landing. In the end I was quite pleased. Recommended for slow-burn horror fans.

I enjoyed the sudden bugfuck freakout at the end of this one, though I didn't think it was always successful at delivering the Name of the Rose atmosphere it was going for. I agree that it took some entertainingly unpredictable turns along the way.
