Project Runway All Stars: Toying With Fashion + Coronation Day
July 2, 2023 5:29 PM - Season 20, Episode 4 - Subscribe

A two-fer! Ep 3: It’s neither fun nor games as the designers must tackle the most feared challenge in the Project Runway canon: the unconventional materials challenge. The fur begins to fly as the all-stars are tasked with creating whimsical runway looks using toys from New York City’s most iconic toy store, FAO Schwarz. Ep 4 It's the first dreaded team challenge of the season, and the designers are heading to the ball because it's Coronation Day. The designers are blindly paired together and tasked with creating couture modern gowns that exemplify royalty.

Toys! Designers get a huge budget, they must be paying retail, for toys. Viktor was the winner. This website has photos of some the entries. Mila was voted off.

The latest episode pairs designers to go all out and create a gown fit for a queen. Or their definition of a queen. With a smaller budget than they got the previous week at the toy store. The winning team was Korto and Prajje. Unfortunately no photos of the spectacular opera coat but the rest of the looks here. The losing team was Kayne and Viktor and the latter was sent home.

Laurence didn't even try in the toy challenge and it showed. They were very very lucky not to be sent home. I was really surprised that Kara Saun and Laurence's royal outfit got such a good critique. The model could barely walk, and it looked like something that was cut from the last scene of Rocky Horror for being too impractical.

Also, a coronation challenge with zero fascinators? How did that happen?

The wrong person was sent home. The team at the bottom should have been Brittany and Anna and Anna should have gone home. Kara Saun's dress was terrible--as Garm said, the model could barely walk--but I thought Laurence's cape was beautiful and I would have liked to see better shots of it. Viktor has shown better clothes in the past three challenges than Anna has, and she's responsible for that dreary train that dragged a boring gown down into a terrible gown. Korto deserved the win, but I could make arguments for Fabio or Hester who made an amazing gown. I was just as blown away as Nina when they showed that the skirt could be taken off. Fantastic.

I'm going to miss Viktor. His unconventional materials coat with the fabulous dragon shoulders was amazing.

I’m going to unreasonably blame Kayne (“All Gowns All The Time”) for Viktor being voted off. That costume looked like something out of an Asian fantasy comic book whereas Viktor on his own made that amazing coat the previous week—did you notice the edging on the lapels and the back slit? Incredible detail.

I agree, either Brittany or Anna should have gone for that sad, drab Marchesa imitation. Brittany over Anna because I can’t stand listening to her tortured back stories that are neither clever nor interesting . OTOH, I liked Kara Saun and Laurence’s Chanel clone despite the hobble skirt. Fabio and Hester’s was truly magnificent but the gray was a mistake despite fitting their narrative (or vice versa). Korto’s opera coat was stunning and the model was wrong to take it off immediately on the runway because the dramatic reveal gown underneath was just okay. It was the coat and the head wrap which cinched the win. I found Rami’s sadly forgettable.

Next week: can’t wait, everyone has to use the same fabric. It’s the Level Playing Field Challenge.

It should have been Anna, for sure. She would have been happy to go back to her baby.

You can’t blame Kayne for the silver metallic leather or the corset, that was all Victor. He shouldn’t have gone home, though. At least he won a nice prize. I don’t think they said what Korto won.

That sad sad dress should have sent both Anna and Brittany home. If I had to choose, I'd pick Anna just to spare us any further "I miss the baaaaaaybeeeee" drama. I swear to god, every single reality show has to pick one woman guaranteed to sob about her children in the mistaken belief that that's the only way other women can relate.

Viktor and Kayne's dress was ludicrous, but at least they tried to do something. Beige tulle is available in every mall department store in both prom and mother of the bride versions. Viktor's goodbye speech to Nina alone was better designed than Anna and Brittany's dress.

My favorites at this point, largely based from their own seasons, are Prajje, Fabio, Kara Saun, and Korto. A Fabio/Kara Saun finale would be Everything.

Anna should've gone home. Every once in a while they over-ambitiously cast someone who's clearly successful in some other culture/aesthetic that the show is not even vaguely congruent with; they end up showing really badly and I feel terrible for them because it's an impossible situation for them. See: Ping Wu.

Conceptually, I will admit it wasn't bad, but the crotch on Fabio and Hester's pant was awful for people going on about being fluent in designing for both genders. But I admit, of the whole crew Hester is the only one I can't stand personally. She is so contrived 24/7 in a way that you can understand in a 23-year-old but is just too much from a 38-year-old who isn't an extreme genius.

I'm trying to remember another example of a man deferring smoothly and successfully to a black woman in a team challenge and can't, so many points to Prajje.

(I also don't remember adoring Prajje's personal style quite as much in his original season, but the man just looks great all the time and in a variety of styles and with an ease and comfort with a little androgyny that certain people could take notes from.)
