[TRAILER] Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), two rebellious teenagers from Southern California, become the frontwomen for the Runaways -- the now-legendary group that paved the way for future generations of female rockers. Under the Svengalilike influence of impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), the band becomes a huge success, with Joan as the band's hard-rocking heart, and Cherie as the sex kitten. However, the teens' stormy relationship threatens the band's future.

Also starring Scout Taylor-Compton, Riley Keough, Stella Maeve, Alia Shawkat, Keir O'Donnell, Johnny Lewis, Hannah Marks, Tatum O'Neal, Brett Cullen, Brendan Sexton III.

Written & directed by Floria Sigismondi. Based on the book Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway by the band's lead vocalist Cherie Currie. Co-produced by Joan Jett.

69% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

box was kind enough to support MeFi with a donation. Their request was for six films about musicians, either biopics or doc. That was too easy, so I'm doing six of each. I'll be using the tag #MusicianStories

Donate $25 or more to MeFi and you can MeMail me a request for a themed day of your own. I'll fill up the sidebar on FF with six movies that fit your theme.

This one might seem an obvious choice, but honestly, I was shocked it wasn't on FF yet. Some of the most electrifying performance scenes of any rock biopic.

Super underrated film.

If I have any complaint about this film, it's sort of a sideways one: while Fanning and Stewart are excellent in their star turns, Michael Shannon's performance as Kim Fowley is so riveting, he threatens to steal every the movie and run away (ha) every time he's in a scene.

I thought it was great when it was released, but haven't seen it since. And looking back: man, what a cast! It feels like Kristen Stewart properly oriented her career on the path she wanted after Clouds of Sils Maria, but I would argue this movie started it. (Here Joan Jett is yet another moody teenager, but feels a lot more complex than all the other sullen teenagers she has played.)

The "Dead End Justice" scene really nails what it feels like to be in a crappy club with a band that is exploding and positively owns the room.

Loved this movie. In addition to the performances by Fanning, Stewart, and Shannon, it's also the first movie role for Riley Keough, currently in Daisy Jones & the Six and the granddaughter of a fairly-well-known musician. (She plays Cherie Currie's twin Marie.)
