The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart: Black Fire Orchid   Show Only
August 7, 2023 11:22 AM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

A young girl suffers a terrible tragedy and goes to live with her estranged grandmother on a flower farm.

Adapted from the novel by Holly Ringland, starring Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alice Hart and Sigourney Weaver as her grandmother. Streaming in the US via Amazon Prime Video. The first three episodes were released on August 4th, 2023; the remaining four episodes will be released weekly on Fridays.

"There are times when the pace of “Alice Hart” can be glacial, but it’s worth being patient with its early chapters, which set the stage for a study of generational loss and the horrible mistakes people make in protecting loved ones." -- Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

"If lies, omissions, etc., are more than usually at the center of things, with characters not being exactly who they are or even think they are, the actual subject of Alice Hart is trauma and the lasting (but not unconquerable) effects of domestic violence — which one feels in the air from its first, deceptively yet suspiciously idyllic opening scenes." -- Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times

"Across seven episodes, June’s intricate web of deceit begins to unravel, but even for those who have not read the source material, the seeds are all planted early enough that the occasionally soapy plot twists, which are part of the novel’s appeal, still feel earned and thoughtfully constructed." -- Max Gao, AV Club

The premiere episode, naturally, introduces us to the key players and sets up the premise. Debnam-Carey does great work as a young girl who can't say the things she wants to (before and after the aforementioned tragedy and a hospital stay), and Weaver (despite a light and wavering attempt at an Australian accent) brings her usual fortitude to bear from a different direction than usual.

All in all, quite an interesting setup, and I look forward to learning more about these characters and their mysteries.

It feels so VC Andrews gothic, I love it even while none of it makes sense (halfway through) - it’s a great atmosphere and honestly Sigourney Weaver with a gun is enough to get me watching. The child actors are good and the violence involved is - it’s the brooding sense of violence coming and the aftermath that is conveyed very well.
