Devastated after her mom's serious accident and grief-stricken because she hasn't become the daughter she wanted to be for her mother, Jia Xiaoling finds herself transported back in time to the year 1981, where she meets her young mother before she was her mom. Hi, Mom was only recently dethroned by Barbie as the highest film ever directed by a solo female director (it grossed over $825 million US dollars).

Starring Jia Ling, Zhang Xiaofei, Shen Teng, Chen He, He Huan, Liu Jia, Ding Jiali, Qiao Shan, He He, Katherine Ackerman.

Directed and co-written by the film's star Jia Ling. A Chinese production in Mandarin.

The film has an average rating of 3.4 on Letterboxd.

Not available via conventional streaming in the US, the film is nevertheless currently on YouTube in its entirety, with English subtitles. JustWatch.

mediareport was kind enough to support MeFi with a donation. Their request was for six recent films that were big hits outside of the US but didn't get much attention stateside. There was a problem, though, in that I was only able to narrow the field to 14 films. Fortunately Soap_and_Bathetic kicked in an extra $15 to push me to share the entire list. I'll be using the tag #PopcornWorld

Donate $25 or more to MeFi and you can MeMail me a request for a themed day of your own. I'll fill up the sidebar on FF with six movies that fit your theme.

This is sentimental, manipulative, derivative... and highly effective.
