The Gilded Age: Wonders Never Cease
December 11, 2023 12:54 PM - Season 2, Episode 7 - Subscribe

New York celebrates a historic event and Bertha reconsiders her loyalty, While Marian is doubting about her future.

Thoughts
- Carrie Coon with her hair down is lovely, but that hat was something else
- Maud is a fraud!
- Good, George is still a robber baron shit, but a sneaky one who supports his wife, but still he should be stabbed with an oyster fork.
- Poor Uncle Luke - just for a moment of brightness. I wonder if his will will be what rescues the Van Rhijns.

CALLED IT but damn, that Maud is one cold broad. I like Aurora's bewilderment about who she even was.

I like being able to say "Maud is a fraud!", but I did still hold out hope that they'd be mutual beard married people, but....

When Agnes insisted Ada go rest, I was afraid she'd smother Luke with a pillow or something.

You knew Oscar was a mark, the way he went all in on the investment scheme against all common sense. Kinda deserved it, but still. Maude rolled him good.

I'm wondering if Rev. Luke was heir to some secret inheritance, which is now Ada's. And the tables turn at the van Rhijn house, with Agnes beholden to Ada to maintain their social status.

I really enjoy Jack's accent.

Good on Watson not rolling over for that asshole son in law's demands.

I have seen this theory floated in a few different places and I instantly loved everything about it and hope it is true with all my heart. I mean, how satisfying will that be.

The other one I've seen is that Marian's father's worthless RR stocks are suddenly worth something, but I like the idea of Rev. Luke being the families savior more because it puts Ada in the drivers seat.

I failed to mention that I actually really appreciated that they allowed Agnes to be so supportive despite her misgivings demonstrating that she's not totally a snarky monster.

I had just assumed that Julian Fellowes was dragging us inexorably to a conclusion where Marian and Larry Russell end up marrying, with the Russell fortune buoying the Van Rhijns and the match lending old-money legitimacy to the Russells. Right?

I could see Marian now feeling increasingly pressured to marry the wrong guy sooner than later as a sacrifice for the security of her aunts . Lots of drama to be mined there.

I can't stop thinking about Aurora Fane introducing Marion to the drunk Mr. Morgan and Oscar to the scammer Ms. Beaton. Where's your BS meter, Aurora.

Yeah, this has been my read - there have been hints of this potential throughout the first and second season. We already know that Dashiell doesn't respect Marian's commitment in charity - I thought we might have gotten a scene this episode of him betraying prejudice (if not outright racism) in reaction to her helping out Peggy/the Black teachers, but there is still time! Meanwhile, Larry has shown he is an ally to #feminism. But in all seriousness, Marian and Larry are both presented as unusually open-minded members of the younger generation, so the match makes sense in the logic of the show.

I don't quite understand how Rev. Luke could have gone downhill quite that quickly. That was one fast-moving cancer.

I also don't understand how Maud Beaton could have gotten the entrée to a very exclusive social scene so easily, and without so much as a genuine fixed address. How was she even receiving her invitations?

It doesn't make any sense that Oscar would have invested almost all of his and his mother's money in one thing he hadn't even checked out properly. He isn't stupid or a kid, and he's been managing his mother's affairs for some years.

The fireworks were lovely, and it was nice to have a succession of scenes of people looking on from their different life circumstances.
