The Color Purple (2023)

A decades-spanning tale of love and resilience and of one woman's journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.

This is a musical but is not always marketed as one. There were similar complaints about Waitress earlier this month, and about the trailers for the upcoming Mean Girls remake.

I loved it. I never saw the Broadway musical and didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It is a different experience than the book or Spielberg movie, but I felt it was in its own way very true to the original story. The musical really emphasizes female solidarity and redemption. The performances are stellar. The direction is brilliant. I hope it wins all the awards.

The book is one of my favorites of all time and I loved the 1985 film as well, so I couldn't help comparing this to those which probably isn't fair, since its pretty different. I did really like the musical aspect. I wish I felt more chemistry between Celie and Shug in this movie. And I also didn't feel as much emotional resonace between many of the characters as the 1985 film. That said, i certainly didn't dislike this version. It's beautiful visually and musically and offers some good performances.
