All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite: April 24, 2024
April 24, 2024 4:54 PM - Season 5, Episode 30 - Subscribe

We all need some cooldown time after some instant classic matches from Dynasty this past weekend. New championship title holders Jon Moxley, Swerve Strickland, Willow Nightingale, and Chris Jericho all put in appearance in segments or matches, and poor Chuckie Taylor is forced to make a doggy choice between his best friends.

The announced card for Dynamite tonight:
We’ll hear from “The Learning Tree” Chris Jericho
Constant re-inventor and new FTW Champ Jericho has a new trademark name, let's see how it plays out qith a crowd that's giving some go-away heat
Mina Shirakawa vs. Anna Jay

Chuck Taylor must choose between his Best Friends Orange Cassidy or the nascent heel Trent Barretta who ambushed Cassidy less than a month ago.

Willow Nightingale’s TBS Championship celebration

AEW World Title Eliminator Match: Swerve Strickland (c) vs. Kyle Fletcher

IWGP World Heavyweight Championship Match: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Powerhouse Hobbs
New champ Moxley is putting up his New Japan title against a Don Callis Family member, which has already drawn criticism for NJPW talent Yota Tsuji questioning whether either of these men could get a visa to Fukuoka, and accusing them of having no respect. (HINT: This is likely part of a work to build to Forbidden Door in two months.)

Just realized while watching the opening eliminator match that with Swerve Strickland vs. Kyle Fletcher, you got two men holding titles that Samoa Joe used to have.

Also hey! Casino Gauntlet Match? Haven't seen one of those in a while!

The Anna Jay/Mina Shirakawa match started out reminding me of that Marvel/DC Amalgam crossover where the alternate company equivalents were matched against each other. A good match became a fun mess with the intrusion of Mariah May, then Toni Storm, and finally Serena Deeb.

Maybe it's the speakers on the TV I'm currently watching on, or maybe it's the unique acoustics of AEW's ancestral home of Daily's Place, but the acoustics of all the promos so far tonight have suuuuuucked. Serena came out to say... something? about Toni Storm's title, and between her music playing and the audience's reaction, I genuinely couldn't make it out.

Willow Nightingale and Mercedes promo was solid throughout, although it troubles me how much of the audience seemed to be on Mercedes' side. Is Willow's destiny to be a transitional champ?

The "casino gauntlet" is a weird stip, so wrestlers come out periodically like in a rumble, but it's also sudden death, first pin wins? It became Will Ospreay vs. The World, (turns out that Ospreay has "retired" the Tiger Driver '91 after Bryan Danielson gave that Oscar-worthy performance of selling at Dynasty) and so when he won we got Roddy Strong and his 70s-cop mustache for a staredown.

Out comes "The Learning Tree" Chris Jericho, smiling and presenting himself as the new "For The World" champion, smothering the crowd with smarmy gratitude, turning Taz's stomach, and I realize there's basically no persona that Jericho can't find a way to turn a corner.

TONY KHAN! TAKING A GUT SHOT FROM JACK PERRY! GETTING MELTZER'd INTO THE MAT!

His dad came out! Shahid Khan to AEW confirmed!

Congrats TK, you've taken a signature move from your company's biggest heels, you are truly a wrestling promoter now.

It’s been reported that Tony Khan continued to sell his injuries at NFL Draft Day, because kayfabe lives on in his heart.
