The Bletchley Circle

I liked The Bletchley Circle enough to want to talk about it, so I submitted it and it's been approved. I'll be posting the first episode next week unless someone else is really motivated and beats me to the punch.

The Bletchley Circle is a television mystery drama miniseries, set in 1952–53, about four women who used to work as codebreakers at Bletchley Park. Dissatisfied with official failure to investigate complex crimes, the women join to investigate for themselves. (wikipedia)

I have seen the show mentioned several times here on MeFi, so I was surprised to realize there was no post for it.

Note: Both seasons are available for streaming on Netflix. 3 episodes per season, so it's a short time committment.

I watched both seasons a few months ago and enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I have a lot to say about it.

I'm about to finish Call the Midwife and Bletchley Circle is next on my list.

immlass: I will have to check out Call the Midwife. It looks like I get some good netflix recommendations based on that show and Bletchley Circle.

donajo: I think it's worthwhile leaving a comment saying you liked the show. Maybe we could talk about the outfits or something? which characters you liked best?

I really liked The Bletchley Circle. S1 was a lot stronger than S2. Still, S2 was a lot stronger than a lot of other shows. Both weren't long enough for me, though.
I'll pretty much watch anything Anna Maxwell Martin is in.

I am a very big fan of this show and look forward to reading anything anybody has to say about it.

Okay, I do have some things to say about this. But I'll wait until there are proper posts.

I would like to watch this. I liked Julie Graham in Survivors and Anna Maxwell Martin in Death Comes to Pemberley (and the Simon Pegg episode of Dr Who, at the broadcast satellite). So it would be new for me.

Great, I'll post the first episode on Monday. Maybe 2 a week?

Oh I really enjoyed this and I'll totally follow any posts about it.

As a side comment--what does this mean? : I submitted it and it's been approved. Is there an approval process for television shows that doesn't exist for movies?

It has to be added to the posting list, so you submit a show suggestion and the mods approve it. I don't know how movies work.

Huh. Thanks--didn't realize!

Loved The Bletchley Circle, but I could understand why it was cancelled. These women, brilliant as they are at the mental exercise of solving crimes, don't have the skills for field work, and the kind of amateur crime solving they were doing required field work. I couldn't see a realistic way to resolve that, or even a way for them to carry on with their amateur work. It would have been awesome to see them form a detective agency and teach themselves the skills they needed, but I don't know how realistic it would have been.
