Ali Siddiq tells true stories of his adolescent years growing up in Houston, Texas which led to his eventual incarceration. Trailer.
I was so captivated by how well he crafts a story. What a way to draw people in, and really nice to hear in Part 4 him telling stories to inmates about other parts of the prison they couldn’t see, and having that be the beginning of his stand up career.
After the final installment, I’m really left with thoughts of his open talk about his homophobia and violence. We’ve always got a bit of that (I mean, he attempts a gun murder in part 1), but here it’s not presented as youthful mistakes, but as points of pride for him in his definition of himself as a man. It sort of reminded me of Chapelle’s admission in the Closer, after all the stuff, that his transphobia stems from his inability to square it with his definition of a man (which you apparently get from some gangster telling you you’ve got balls). I really enjoy his writing and pretty much everything about his performance, but I suppose that bit of subject matter is what’s occupying most of my thoughts after the finale. Overall, I thought this was great.
